About The Unit: UChicago STEM Education is a center devoted to research and development that resides within the Physical Sciences Division (PSD) of the University of Chicago. Formerly the Center for Elementary Mathematics and Science Education, UChicago STEM Education continues the University of Chicago's long-standing commitment to improving pre college education and aims to support high quality mathematics and science instruction and learning for all students. Through the sharing of knowledge and the creation of useful products and programs, UChicago STEM Education seeks to make a positive difference for mathematics and science instruction throughout the nation. UChicago STEM Education recently received a multi-year, multi-million grant to research, develop, and improve digital and print tools that can help high school teachers build financial capability in their students. The project has UChicago STEM Education working closely with over a hundred teachers and thousands of students to test and evaluate new evidence-based approaches to financial education and empowerment. UChicago STEM Education pioneered the Everyday Mathematics curriculum that is used by more than four million students each year in the United States. It will draw upon that experience to expand youth access to high-quality, research-based financial education.

Unit Job Summary: A successful candidate for The Financial Education Specialist will bring expertise in financial capability, personal finance, and/or economics to a curriculum development and teacher support group at UChicago STEM Education. The candidate will work alongside experts in K-12 education, curriculum design, developmental psychology, learning science, economics, financial literacy, digital tool development, and teacher professional development to develop and inform the design of new financial capability tools for high school students, teachers, and schools. The Financial Education Specialist will identify promising strategies in youth financial education, as well as gaps in existing approaches. The Financial Education Specialist will help develop and test new evidence-based tools, working with principals, teachers, and students to field test and evaluate their impact. The candidate will be a part of a team to help reshape and further the field of youth financial education. The Financial Education Specialist must have a strong financial background to elicit findings from the research literature and operationalize those findings for youth. Candidates with experience providing financial coaching, counseling, and/or education to adults or youth are especially encouraged to apply. An understanding of financial education, particularly with respect to the latest innovations and/or approaches in the field is a plus. Unit Education: Bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics, or a related field required. Advanced degree preferred.

Unit Experience: A minimum of three years of relevant business, finance or economics experience required.

Unit Job Function Competencies: Knowledge of financial literacy curriculum/programs. Advanced knowledge of finance course subject matter required either though education or work experience. Ability to develop programs, curricula, lesson plans and assessment tools required. Ability to use assessment data to make decisions to improve instruction and professional development required. Strong verbal and written communication skills required. Ability to work independently and as part of a team required. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadline required. Knowledge of instructional methodologies and professional development a plus.
