About The Unit: The University of Chicago Language Center (CLC) is a vibrant hub for innovative language pedagogy, providing professional development and support to language instructors and students at all levels of the over 50 languages taught each year at the University of Chicago. The Summer Language Institute and the English Language Institute were recently inaugurated under the aegis of the CLC, and a shared-course initiative was launched in 2015. The Office of Language Assessment is an overarching component of all these undertakings and plays a critical role across all languages taught on the University of Chicago campus.

Unit Job Summary: The Humanities Division will have English language tester opportunities in the Chicago Language Center's Office of Language Assessment. Testers will assess international students and scholars' academic English proficiency through the Academic English Proficiency Assessment (AEPA) and provide a results summary. The Testers will administer the AEPA online via a video-conferencing software program. - Close coordination with the Office of Language Assessment for administration of the AEPA - Attending a tester training and showing evidence of accurate and consistent grading - Reporting the AEPA results summary to the Office of Language Assessment - Coordination with other testers and Office of Language Assessment staff on development and grading of AEPAs We seek experienced and diverse applicants with a documented record of successful language instruction and/or assessment. Employment is available contingent upon demand.

Unit Education: Master's degree in language or literature, applied linguistics or a related field required, Ph.D. strongly preferred

Unit Experience: Prior language instruction experience at the university or four-year college level, or an equivalent required Experience working with Microsoft Office programs and multimedia preferred

Unit Job Function Competencies: Required Prior language instruction experience at the university or four-year college level, or an equivalent Knowledge of different approaches to language pedagogy, including language assessment/testing Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal Ability to use one's own personal computer to conduct assessments Preferred Knowledge of the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and previous experience with proficiency-oriented language instruction preferred Physical Demands Job requires sitting at computer for long periods of time and performing data entry that requires looking at computer screen for hours at a time. Job entails periodic walking to other campus locations; climbing stairs; filing and mailing activities while standing; periodic stooping; carrying small-to-medium-sized loads; and operating small- and medium-sized pushcarts.
