About The Unit:

Unit Job Summary: How well an organization may communicate with and listen to its community is often a foundational element in that organization's success. In this role, the Writer develops communication strategies and initiatives, assists with communications issues and crisis management, and creates promotional and feature content targeted not only to faculty, staff (IT and University), and students, but to the external individuals or agencies within the sphere of the University's work and influence. The Writer will develop content strategies and materials to promote the value of IT, IT services, the IT community, and IT partnerships among campus leadership, schools, divisions, units, and customers, highlighting how ITS and IT can uniquely engage in innovative support of research, teaching, and safety, finance, and business operations. The Writer will interface with IT and IT-related individuals and groups (e.g., SLG, service owners, and ITLC) to understand needs, and assist in managing promotional and outreach efforts. The Writer will assist with internal staff communications to increase awareness and engagement among ITS and IT staff. The Writer will set and maintain editorial standards among IT Engagement and ITS staff And, the Writer will research, draft, and edit communications used to highlight the innovative work performed by IT in support of the University's mission and goals. Essential Functions: Research, interview sources, write, edit/proofread, and distribute news releases, feature articles, social media posts, and announcements to keep the University community informed about IT-related activities, initiatives, and events. Assist with issues management and execute internal and external public relations and promotional campaigns through multi-channel dissemination to keep the University and the public informed about relevant services, programs, and issues. Develop annual and executive reports and informational summaries. Provide leadership for Engagement team members and other ITS staff regarding writing, editing, style, and related proficients. Other duties than expressly identified in this document may be assigned.

Unit Education: Bachelor's degree in communications, business, or liberal arts fields required. Advanced degree preferred.

Unit Experience: Minimum two years of experience writing and editing content, including news articles, executive reports, promotional campaigns, and crisis communications, within information technology organizations required. Experience managing communications projects and efforts including those requiring routine publishing on schedule required.

Unit Job Function Competencies: Must exhibit exceptional written and verbal/presentation communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate in both highly technical and non-technical environments required. Must have proven ability to interpret technical terminology and concepts, and to present information to non-technical audiences required. Must possess effective listening stills, with demonstrated ability to build feedback loops required. Must exhibit exceptional customer relationship skills and be able to establish effective, collaborative working relationships at all levels of a diverse and distributed organization required. Must possess indefatigable energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels required. Must have proven ability to work under deadlines to write, edit, and produce communications media required. Strong results-oriented accountability, with ability to set priorities independently, provide follow-through, and meet objectives required. Ability to understand and maximize the nuances of different forms of communication required. Must be able to interact effectively with a wide variety of faculty, staff, and students, both in person and in writing required. Ability to implement complex initiatives and thrive on handling a variety of issues concurrently preferred. Entrepreneurial, enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives preferred. Demonstrated skill in website content creation and editing preferred.
