The primary responsibility of the Director of Freshman Recruitment is to ensure the effectiveness of the day-to-day operations of the freshman recruitment unit in order to meet stated freshman enrollment goals, including specific goals throughout each stage of the enrollment funnel.

  • The Director of Freshman Recruitment will ensure that each recruitment team implements the necessary programs and efforts to meet the goals, deadlines and timelines associated with each project.
  • The Director of Freshman Recruitment will ensure the smooth and effective operations of the freshman recruitment units.

The Director of Freshman Recruitment will lead the Freshman Recruitment unit teams of national recruitment, college-based recruitment, high-achieving student recruitment, student of color recruitment, and the campus visit and events unit.
This position will:
1. Direct and oversee a 25+ member staff.
2. Directly supervise 6 full-time staff members.
3. Oversee implementation and continued enhancement of short-range and long-term outreach and recruitment activities to support university enrollment goals.

The Director will support the development and maintenance of campus partnerships and collaborations and advance university goals and programming related to outreach and recruitment by cultivating relationships with on-campus partners, school counselors, and community stakeholders

The Director of Freshman Recruitment will serve as a member of the senior application review team and as a member of the division’s senior leadership team.

Major Job duties include:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations and activities and  targeted efforts of: the Office of Admissions Freshman Recruitment unit and the Office of Admissions Campus Visit and Events unit.
  • Work with the AVPEM to develop recruitment plans for freshman recruitment as well as each reporting team (national recruitment, college-based recruitment, high-achieving student recruitment, student of color recruitment, and the campus visit and events unit).
  • Meet stated recruitment goals by project (recruitment, application, confirmation); track recruitment programs and ensure that proactive adjustments are made as necessary to ensure that recruitment efforts are effectively supporting the achievement of the University’s and each college’s enrollment goals.
  • Manage freshman application review team to manage the admissions counselor role in the comprehensive application review process for freshman applicants. 
  • Effectively manage unit budgets and expenditures of approximately $18 million.
  • Travel locally and nationally as needed to represent the University of Minnesota and   the AVPEM at programs, events, and meetings, both internally and externally (conferences, high school programs, etc.).
  • Serve on university and professional committees as assigned.
  • Connect with and foster diverse and inclusive networks locally and nationally; develop and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders.
  • Ensure the implementation of effective training and professional development opportunities for all staff members at all levels.
  • Ensure that extra-mile customer service is provided to students, families, and other internal and external stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least 12 years of relevant work experience.
  • Five years of progressively more responsible supervisory/management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a large, complex organization.
  • More than five years of progressive responsibility in undergraduate admissions and recruitment at a public or non-profit four-year institution.
  • Experience in using data and admissions systems to track program and student success; demonstrated understanding of recruitment and admissions data necessary to ensure success of recruitment programs.
  • Demonstrated experience with effective budget management.
  • Five years of progressively more responsible supervisory/management experience.
  • Strong commitment to diversity and experience working with diverse communities.  
  • Experience developing and mentoring a large professional staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and build positive relationships with colleagues across campus.
  • Experience developing, planning, implementing, and tracking the success of undergraduate admissions recruitment programming.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends and travel as needed.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills (including verbal, written, and presentation).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of individuals with diverse backgrounds.
  • Working knowledge of effective recruitment tactics.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience as a member of an organization’s leadership team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Understanding of both Minnesota and national recruitment and enrollment trends and environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing large scale recruitment programs.
  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience with the University of Minnesota, a large public research institution, or an AAU institution.
