Reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students (AVP/Dean) provides leadership consistent with the University’s common purpose to transform lives through teaching, research, and service. The AVP/Dean oversees the Dean of Students Office, which includes the Sandler Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Education, Greek Life, the Chaplains’ Association, Judicial Affairs, and Veteran Student Services. The AVP/Dean works closely with students and student organizations to enhance their educational experience and advocate for their varied needs and interests and also serves as the University’s judicial officer. The AVP/Dean interacts regularly with academic and administrative University units and serves as a primary resource for parents, faculty, staff, law enforcement, and external community members on various student-related matters, including crisis response and Title IX. This position supervises 40 staff including a management team of six professionals and has responsibility for an annual budget exceeding $2 million.
A master’s degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, enrollment management, or a related field is required, a doctorate is preferred, with a minimum of ten years of progressive leadership experience in student affairs in a higher education setting that includes demonstrated work in judicial affairs. Additional knowledge, experience, and capabilities needed for success in the AVP/Dean positon include: a knowledge of best practices in judicial affairs, an understanding of student development issues, and a familiarity with higher education law including Title IX compliance and NCAA regulations; experience in counseling and conflict management; working successfully through difficult or crisis situations and managing all levels of institutional response, from parents to the external community; and a familiarity with Greek letter organizations.
