Job Description
The University of South Carolina is seeking an experienced, creative public relations coordinator with the ability to develop and execute strategic communications on behalf of individual colleges and units on the Columbia campus. The successful candidate will be able to create engaging contentconsistent with USC's brand identity for external media outlets as well as other targeted key audiences. Experience with media relations, proficiency with existing social media channels and a knowledge of emerging trends in the public relations field is a must.

In addition to promoting the activities of the university, the public relations coordinator is responsible for developing the skills of faculty and staff to more effectively engage with external audiences.

The public relations coordinator will operate in a dynamic team setting and must have the ability to execute multiple projects simultaneously. An entrepreneurial spirit and curiosity about the superior teaching, research, and student experience on USC's campus is beneficial.
Coordinate promotion of a number of academic and administrative areas on campus

Develop and coordinate media relations and public information efforts and advises and trains administrators, faculty, staff and students within assigned units on how to effectively communicate to various audiences

Compile and distribute the department's media daybook

Develop pitches to local and national media outlets (including print, broadcast and web-based)

Create news tips and advisories

Coordinated media events

Use a broad range of traditional and emerging communications tools to amplify key messages, including various social media platforms

Serve as a brand ambassador and promote the professional services of the Office of Communications and Public Affairs to academic and administrative units

Skills and Qualifications:
Minimum of two years' experience in content strategy, journalism or public relations role

Proven ability to create engaging content across platforms

Track record of successfully pitching stories to external media

Proficiency with social media platforms and monitoring performance

Knowledge of AP style is a must along with the ability to be a self-editor

Project management skills and an ability to meet deadlines are necessary

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and 5 years professional experience related to the development and dissemination of informational material. Two years of experience in a content strategy, journalism, marketing or public relations role.

Preferred Qualifications
Five years of experience in professional public relations role. Experience in professional journalism.
