Description of Position
College of the Sequoias Community College District is seeking a candidate to fill a full–time, tenure-track position in History beginning August 11, 2017. Duties include:
Teaching history classes at either the Visalia campus and/or at the Hanford and/or Tulare campuses. Assignment may include evening and/or weekends.
Other responsibilities include participation in the governance of the college via committee assignments, maintenance of a required number of office hours to meet student needs, full participation in departmental responsibilities and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equality, justice, and appreciation for diversity throughout our college.

Minimum Qualifications
The candidate must meet one of the following criteria. The degree must be from an institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges or the equivalent.
• Master's in history or
• Bachelor's in history AND Master's in political science,
humanities, geography, area studies, women's studies,
social science or ethnic studies or
• The equivalent and
• Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the
diverse academic, social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
• Willingness to use student learning outcomes that have been produced in a collaborative process with other history faculty.
• Evidence of working with students from diverse backgrounds.
• Evidence of the ability to address the needs of frequently under-prepared students.
• Teaching experience at the postsecondary level.
• Ph.D. in history.

Candidates claiming equivalency must demonstrate a combination of education and other accomplishments that are equivalent to the above MQ's. If claiming equivalency, you will need to read the Board Policy 7211 on equivalency and prepare a statement documenting how you feel you meet the equivalent qualifications.

Note:
Candidates claiming equivalency must receive a judgement of equivalency from the COS Equivalency Committee prior to the interview.

Desirable Qualifications
The Hiring Committee seeks the following:
• Evidence of successful teaching.
• Teaching experience in World History, American History,
and Western Civilization.
• Evidence of ongoing professional development in
history and teaching.
• Evidence of enthusiastic participation in professional
responsibilities, community, and campus service.
• Experience with course and program assessment.
• Ability to incorporate student learning outcomes within
courses and programs.

Conditions of Employment
Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Initial placement with Master's degree ranges from $57,943 to $76,393.
Medical/dental/vision insurance program for employee and dependents and $100,000 employee life insurance is provided.
Retirement Plan provided.
Contract period is for ten (10) months during the regular academic year beginning August 2017 through May 2018.
Pre-service orientation and/or inservice meetings will be offered in August 2017.
A collective bargaining agreement exists, and membership in the College of the Sequoias Teachers Association (COSTA) or payment of a service fee is required.

Screening Procedure
Only complete application packages will be evaluated by a qualified screening committee as soon as possible after the closing date. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not assure the candidate an interview. Application materials will be screened to determine the extent to which they meet the Qualifications. A selected group of candidates will be invited for oral interviews. After initial interviews, finalists may be asked to return for a second interview.
All costs incurred as a result of the application/selection process shall be borne by the candidate.

• Completed COS academic/administrative application form
• Letter of interest which addresses each of the Desirable Qualifications and presents your philosophy of teaching history (500-600 words).
• Diversity Statement (included in the application packet)
• Curriculum Vitae or Resume
• A sample writing assignment accompanied by a rationale
for that assignment.
• Unofficial copies of transcripts of college/university
work. Official transcripts are required for employment.
• Two (2) recent letters of recommendation addressing
pertinent experience or equivalent competencies.
