The Stanford University IT Technical Facilities Manager is directly responsible for planning, design, acquisition, construction and O&M activities pertaining to highly specialized and mission-critical facilities such as data centers, electronic communications hubs (ECHs) and other auxiliary computing facilities. This includes coordination and oversight for conventional building facilities systems, maintenance programs and non-conventional systems such as UPS, Generator, life safety, AC and DC infrastructure systems which directly support the computing and telecommunications equipment and infrastructure for the Stanford University community. This position reports to the Director of IT Facilities Management and Business Continuity Management within University IT - IT Services.

  • Lead and manage all business, technical, and education activities related to the centrally-managed computing and communications facilities. This includes planning, construction oversight, provisioning, and operational management to ensure that facilities meet both current and future needs. These facilities include, but are not limited to:
      • Three large computing facilities (approximately 25K square feet total)
      • Seven geographically-distributed Electronic Communication Hubs (ECHs, approximately 9K square feet total)
      • One Auxiliary Data Center located out of area (approximately 350 square feet total)
  • Exercise full management responsibility for a technical group, including recruiting, hiring, training, developing, evaluating, and setting priorities.
  • Ensure work completion within schedule, budgetary, and design constraints; make decisions about analysis, design, and testing; solve complex technical problems; provide alternative methods for achieving goals when necessary.
  • Plan and execute enterprise-wide, zone-level projects (such as building a new data center and/or ECH) that require coordination with multiple groups across campus. Provide meaningful contribution and leadership in project planning; setting priorities and developing operational and project specific budgets. Investigate, propose, implement and manage construction projects and maintenance activities to meet operational and facilities benchmark goals.
  • Provide strategic planning for own work group; may assist higher level management in broader scope strategic planning for a large, complex, university-wide function or major initiative.
  • Create procedures and guidelines governing the use of space, infrastructure hardware installation, and maintenance to insure best practices are being observed and compliance requirements are being met.
  • Develop and manage budgets for projects or work groups. Specifically, the Technical Facilities Manager is accountable for managing service center, capital and project specific budgets in excess of $7M. This includes proposing new budgets, seeking special-project funding (capital and project specific), and proposing rapid reallocation of resources when unplanned activities are encountered.
  • Evaluate and as necessary change how facilities are designed, built and configured to facilitate the strategic distribution of equipment and services in support of disaster preparedness and recovery. Proactively seek opportunities for automation. Develop and analyze performance measures for facilities systems. Provide monthly project and metrics reports for areas of responsibility.
  • May oversee or assist in preparation and submission of documentation, such as proposals, progress reports, or other contractual requirements.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with utility and other service providers to ensure services and utilities are being provided to support the operating and programmatic demands of the computing and communications facilities.
  • Monitor technology trends and evaluate emerging technologies for adoption and implementation.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to leverage the university/school's investments in information technology. Coordinate with internal and external clients as appropriate when scheduling work and maintenance activities in accordance with both business and academic calendars to minimize business impacts to the Stanford community. Ensure that change management processes are being followed.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant work experience in managing an Enterprise-wide data center(s) or in facilities planning, maintenance and construction, or a combination of education and relevant experience. Bachelor's degree in in the field of Computer Science, Telecommunications or Construction related fields is strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Detailed understanding of relevant technical knowledge and problem resolution.
  • Strong customer relationship skills, consensus building skills, and ability to establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop staff.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to use good judgment under pressure.
  • Organized and able to dispatch multiple tasks with changing priorities and work under minimum supervision.
  • Experience with managing budgets and strong interpersonal, organizational and project management skills required.
  • Working knowledge of the entire suite of PC desktop-based tools such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of network, Unix, Windows and Storage systems hardware for the purpose of determining electrical and mechanical needs is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of ITSM, DCIM and CAD tools is also preferred. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, use a telephone.
