Position Information
The HVAC/R & Food Services Supervisor oversees the HVAC/R and food services equipment skilled trades and staff under the Work Planning & Services unit of Facilities Services. Oversees inspection, repair, preventative maintenance, operation, calibration, installation and maintaining Air Quality Management District (AQMD), building code, and safety requirements on refrigeration, commercial food service equipment, chillers and cooling tower equipment. Provides direct supervision to trade staff: assigns and directs daily work assignments; reviews work for quality and completion; monitors work orders and closes out completed work orders. Reviews plans, specifications, and requisitions for projects to establish daily, weekly, and long-range work schedules. Obtains and maintains stock inventory of parts, materials and equipment necessary for timely completion of projects. Coordinates, facilitates and monitors, safety and technical, training programs. Ensures safety procedures are followed and maintained. Promotes and maintains a strong customer service focused environment and cooperative teamwork philosophy in the unit. Responsible for daily operational administration and personnel management, including staffing, hiring, training, disciplinary action and performance management. Maintains knowledge of building and safety codes, hazardous material handling and disposal, and labor contracts. Provides operational support to other Facilities Services units, as necessary. Facilities Services is one of the largest departments at UC Riverside employing nearly 400 career employees. Facilities Services provides exceptional service in maintaining an environment conducive of teaching, learning, living, working and research for the entire campus community. The department maintains buildings, facilities and landscape totaling over 6 million square feet across 1,350 acres of campus. Minimum Requirements
Skills to actively promote and maintain safety standards.
Solid knowledge and skills in the specialty craft supervised.
Solid skills to effectively select and evaluate staff, and to appropriately handle disciplinary issues.
Solid supervisory skills to include organization, scheduling, assigning work and ensuring quality standards are met.
Ability to ensure that quality and customer service standards are communicated, implemented and continually monitored.
Ability establish and maintain interpersonal relations with diverse personnel, vendors and campus clients.
Skill in communicating effectively with campus clients, contractors, and support staff both verbally and in writing. Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
Ability to be flexible to shifting priorities, demands and timelines. Strong organizational skills to successfully complete multiple assignments with competing deadlines. Skill in working effectively, following through on assignments with minimal direction and a fluctuating workload.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
Proficient computer/technical skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Ability to generate and provide reports on project status, staffing, equipment, schedules, metrics, etc.
Knowledge and understanding of applicable laws, rules, codes, regulations, and internal policies.
Ability to motivate and inspire staff to provide the highest level of quality and service to campus constituents.
Knowledge of the HVAC/R and food services equipment maintenance skilled trades. Ability to supervise and work at the emergency repair and routine maintenance of all kitchen related equipment such as, but not limited to, walk-in freezers and refrigerators, commercial dishwashers, steam, gas and electric cooking equipment combi/convectional ovens, and conveyor systems.
Knowledge of function, operation and service of various utility distribution systems such as electrical or gas fired steam and hot water boilers, low pressure steam boilers, and related distribution systems, chillers (centrifugal/reciprocal/screw) and cooling towers, circulating/booster pumps, both pneumatic and electric controls, air compressors and all related auxiliaries. Knowledge of and/or experience with the Air Quality Management District (AQMD) permit policies, procedures and regulations which involve the emissions from boilers/steam generators, chillers and refrigerant systems equipment.


Preferred Qualifications
Solid financial skills to accurately project costs of potential jobs and to consistently complete work within established budgetary and time constraints.
