Under the general direction of the Chief Physician of the Student Health Services (SHS), this position provides psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up to patients referred from SHS and the Counseling Center. This positions provides critical expertise and consultation to SHS primary care clinicians and Counseling Center staff to care for the most complex and acute mental health conditions facing students.
This is a per diem position with a rate of $90.90/hour.
Evaluation, Diagnosis, Treatment & Follow-Up
Performs medical/psychiatric evaluations and provides care for students with psychiatric disorders. Prescribes and monitors psychotropic medications, advising patients of potential benefits and side effects and providing instruction on drug administration and actions to take in the event of side effects. Orders lab tests as appropriate. Supplies ongoing treatment and follow-up as appropriate.
Collaborates directly with mental health treatment team members for an interdisciplinary approach to mental health cases. Assures appropriate management of psychiatric cases, which may include assuming overall management of challenging clinical cases.
Responsible for assuring continuous and ongoing quality, accessibility and safety of psychiatric services to the patients.
Maintains professional standards of documentation using Electronic Medical Records that are succinct and accurate and completed in a timely fashion. Informed consent is obtained and documented where applicable. Medication allergies and side effects are documented appropriately. Initial intake, closing summaries, referral forms and other required documents are completed appropriately.
Provides psychiatric consultation to SHS clinicians (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants), Counseling Center professionals (including senior clinicians, interns, and other trainees), and UCR social workers. When clinically appropriate consults with Student Affairs administrators, academic, professional and departmental advisors, and to staff of other campus departments when there are psychiatric concerns or emergencies involving students.
This may include identification and implementation of case management strategies, situation assessment and management (e.g., aberrant behavior), facilitation of care and appropriate disposition is emphasized.
Contributes to the establishment of policy regarding psychiatric diagnosis, treatment, referral, confidentiality, release of information to and from outside professional sources, record keeping and any other issues affecting standards of standards of practice for psychiatry.
Contributes to review of mental health records according to departmental standards, policies and procedures, quality of care issues and QI studies. Will be actively involved in supporting Chief Physician to attain AAAHC re-accreditation.
Within SHS reports to supervisor all issues which may impact patient care and safety and contributes to their resolution. When working with Counseling Center clients, reports to the Counseling Center director or clinical director all issues which may impact client care and safety and contributes to their resolution.
Experience working in a University Student Health Center
Experience working with college age population.
Experience working with Point and Click "EMR".
