Position Information: The Carpentry Supervisor oversees the carpentry trade and staff under the Work Planning & Services unit of the Facilities Services department. Oversees work for alterations, general repairs, and minor modifications of campus facilities, including wall removal, casework, and door repair/installation; minor masonry and roofing; repairs to hardscape and roofing systems. Provides direct supervision to trade staff, monitors work assignments, and assures proper safety procedures are followed and maintained. Obtains and maintains stock inventory of parts, materials and equipment necessary for timely completion of projects. Reviews plans, specifications, and requisitions for projects to establish daily, weekly, and long-range work schedules. Assigns and directs work assignments to staff, reviews work for quality and completion, and closes out completed work orders. Promotes and maintains a strong customer service focused environment and cooperative teamwork philosophy in the unit. Responsible for daily operational administration and personnel management, including staffing, hiring, training, disciplinary action, termination, and performance management. Maintains knowledge of building and safety codes, hazardous material handling and disposal, and labor contracts. Provides operational support to other Facilities Services units as necessary. Reporting to the division of Business & Administrative Services (BAS), Facilities Services is one of the largest departments at UC Riverside employing nearly 400 career employees. Facilities Services provides exceptional service in maintaining an environment conducive of teaching, learning, living, working and research for the entire campus community. The department maintains buildings, facilities and landscape totaling over 6 million square feet across 1,350 acres of campus. Minimum Requirements: Solid knowledge and skills in the specialty craft supervised.
Solid skills to effectively select and evaluate staff, and to appropriately handle disciplinary issues.
Solid supervisory skills to include organization, scheduling, assigning work and ensuring quality standards are met.
Skills to actively promote and maintain safety standards.
Ability to ensure that quality and customer service standards are communicated, implemented and continually monitored.
Ability to motivate and inspire staff to provide the highest level of quality and service to campus constituents.
Knowledge and understanding of applicable laws, rules, codes, regulations, and internal policies.
Ability to generate and provide reports on project status, staffing, equipment, schedules, metrics, etc.
Proficient computer/technical skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
Ability to be flexible to shifting priorities, demands and timelines. Strong organizational skills to successfully complete multiple assignments with competing deadlines. Skill in working effectively, following through on assignments with minimal direction and a fluctuating workload.
Skill in communicating effectively with campus customers, contractors, and support staff both verbally and in writing. Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
Ability establish and maintain interpersonal relations with diverse personnel, vendors and campus customers.
Preferred Qualifications: Solid financial skills to accurately project costs of potential jobs and to consistently complete work within established budgetary and time constraints.
