Job Description
The Coleman Karesh Law Library at the University of South Carolina School of Law seeks an enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and experienced colleague for the position of Cataloging/Serials Metadata Librarian. This newly-created position will be responsible for cataloging all materials for the law library, processing of Government Documents, and handling all the binding for the law library. This is a non-tenure track faculty position that reports directly to the Head of Technical Services.

The Cataloging/Serials Metadata Librarian will be responsible for cataloging and maintaining serials and journals in all formats, including print and digital resources. This individual will be responsible for creating and maintaining metadata representing the library's digital, physical, and virtual collections. The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Technical Services to evaluate and document policies, procedures, and workflows for the cataloging department. This person will be responsible for original and complex cataloging of all materials, applying national standards using Resource Description and Access (RDA), the Library of Congress Classification System, and the Library of Congress Subject Headings, among other processes. The Cataloging/ Serials Metadata Librarian will be or become proficient in all aspects of the cataloging module of the Millennium integrated library system. This individual will also be responsible for the maintenance and processing of all state and federal government documents, and be responsible for the binding of all materials, with collaborative responsibility for the creation of policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned by the Head of Technical Services and/or the Director of the Law Library.

Minimum Qualifications
MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution; knowledge and practical experience with Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject headings (LCSH), Library of Congress Classification (LCC), and MARC 21 formats for bibliographic and authority data; strong commitment to service enhancement through teamwork and responsiveness to clients;
excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to work independently and to collaborate effectively with staff at all levels and with people of all backgrounds, promoting teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness; ability to think strategically and manage responsibilities independently; demonstrated problem-solving skills, effective organizational capacity, and the ability to prioritize workflow; willingness to learn new processes and procedures; ability to take direction as well as provide direction to others; flexible and positive attitude; excellent interpersonal skills; and demonstrated ability to use spreadsheets and database programs to manage statistics.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with the following:
- Cataloging operations in an academic environment or a complex library such as a law library or special library
- OCLC WorldCat and OCLC Connexion
- Creation of original cataloging, copy cataloging, metadata creation, and database maintenance
- Continuous maintenance of the quality of the catalog
- Importing records from OCLC and the effective integration of records into Millennium
- Developing policies, procedures, and goals for the cataloging department, and creating detailed written manuals reflective of the workflow in the cataloging area
- Compiling and maintaining cataloging statistics, meeting internal and external requirements
- Maintaining and processing federal and state government documents
- The functions for the binding of all materials for the law library, including communicating with an external commercial bindery
- The III Millennium integrated library system, especially related to the cataloging module

Aptitude for detail-oriented work; strong analytic problem-solving skills; ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines; demonstrated experience handling multiple priorities and/or projects; continuous professional development to keep current with metadata standards and cataloging policies and procedures; ability to exercise sound professional judgment; ability to locate and disseminate legal information in print and electronic formats; familiarity with legal and non-legal electronic resources; and ability to adapt to change in the legal information environment.
