1890 Extension Administrator
Alabama A&M University invites nominations and applications for the position of 1890 Extension Administrator, Alabama Cooperative Extension System-Urban Affairs Unit (ACES-UA).
Alabama A&M University is seeking a visionary and transformative leader with an entrepreneurial spirit to provide statewide leadership for strategic planning and engagement for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (“ACES”), the primary outreach organization for the land-grant mission of Alabama A&M University and Auburn University, dedicated to delivering research-based educational programs designed to empower individuals to improve their quality of life and economic well-being. The 1890 Administrator (“1890 Admin”) is responsible for the operation and management of the Urban Unit of the System. The 1862 Extension Director and 1890 Extension Administrator provide statewide leadership for Extension programs emanating from AU and AAMU. The 1890 Extension Administrator reports to the president of Alabama A&M University.
The 1890 Extension Administrator will serve in the chief executive function with the 1862 Extension Director for ACES. They are responsible for the overall vision, mission, direction and goals; provides transformative leadership, focus, an entrepreneurial spirit and strategic initiative that directs ACES into the future through progressive, positive change; assures understanding of and commitment to the foundations of the unified Extension System in Alabama as laid out in the Knight vs. State, State of Alabama Code, the ACES Governance Manual and the ACES Policy Manual; leads by utilizing a consensus building decision making model that enhances the unified System through reliance on knowledge, skills, and competencies of each leadership team member and those available at each university; interacts closely with the Directors of the Agricultural Experiment Stations and other administrators at Alabama A&M University and Auburn University to develop multistate Extension activities and integrated research and Extension programs; leads the development and growth of a dynamic revenue stream to ACES with emphasis on traditional sources as well as new, innovative, entrepreneurial sources; oversees a fiscally responsible and effective financial resources management system that meets all applicable state, federal, and funder required criteria; ensures that ACES programs are inclusive and meets the needs of Alabama’s diverse population; advises the Presidents of the System’s parent universities on policy, programming and related issues affecting the functioning of ACES; and interacts with the Administrator of the Tuskegee Cooperative Extension to assure a coordinated design and delivery of Extension by the three land grant universities in Alabama.
Qualified candidates must have an earned terminal degree in a discipline or combination of disciplines that provide adequate background in developing, implementing, and evaluating non-formal and formal educational programs; credentials appropriate for professorial rank or status; demonstrated experience with the unique needs of urban audiences and the complex issues facing urban families, youth and communities; a career track of progressive administrative/executive leadership roles with demonstrated success in program planning, implementation, evaluation and assessment; and a working knowledge of current communications and information systems technologies utilized in advancing Outreach and Extension programs. A verifiable record of acquiring financial support from individuals, government, foundations, and corporate entities; and the ability to build coalitions, facilitate and blend the interests and resources of disparate groups to advance the mission and purpose of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System is needed. Full professorial rank with tenure and experience earned within an academic, business, government or Cooperative Extension settings is preferred, with requisite knowledge of the history and philosophy of the Land-Grant University and Cooperative Extension and awareness of the contemporary issues facing higher education inclusive of Extension.
