Essential functions of this position:
The “Hot Food Service Maintenance Technician” primarily performs maintenance and repairs on Food Service cooking equipment (gas, electric, and steam) units, both portable and stationary. In addition, this position troubleshoots and makes repairs on a variety of food service equipment, along with repairs to electric and gas appliances.
The incumbent works on both assigned and diagnosed repair and maintenance tasks including inspections as appropriate on all food service equipment; works in accordance with required policies and procedures and safety practices for the university; interacts with the campus community as an Auxiliary Services customer service representative and performs other duties as assigned.
N.C. Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.
Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Thorough knowledge of commercial food service equipment with emphasis on all “hot” cooking equipment and peripheral apparatus including strong background in the methods, tools, materials, equipment and computerized systems used in the maintenance, adjustment and repair of food service equipment and accessories
Knowledge of commercial electrical, gas and steam equipment and associated electrical theory and principles including applicable state and federal regulations pertaining to commercial food service equipment and applicable environmental regulations
Able to utilize/operate hand tools, pressurized steam boilers utilized in commercial cooking, and measuring units, voltage regulators, including tools utilized food service; ability to make skilled repairs to applicable food service equipment, maintenance and/or commercial food service repair equipment
Able to diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions; perform a variety of skilled repairs on equipment; work from schematics, drawings and sketches to fabricate parts; perform required minor welding/soldering work; inspect wide range of food service equipment and determine extent of repairs
Able to estimate cost, time and materials of work and repairs; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position
Preferred education, professional skills and experience:
Certified Food Equipment Service Technician and two or more years of journeyman level experience in the electrical and gas fuel piping for food service equipment repair and maintenance trade along with basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, along with gas and steam systems also preferred
Certifications or licensure required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience as a food service repair mechanic that demonstrates achievement of a journeyman skill level equivalent to that acquired through completion of a program for electrical, gas, steam certification
Valid Certified Food Service Equipment Technician Certification and documented gas fuel piping and cooking equipment connectivity certification
Valid drivers’ license or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment
Recruitment Range: $40,000 to $42,485
NC Salary Grade Equivalency: 65
Hours Per Week: 1.0 (40 hours per week)
