Associate University Librarian for Collections & Scholarly Communication
The UCLA Library seeks an innovative and visionary leader for the position of Associate University Librarian for Collections & Scholarly Communication, a key senior leadership position in the UCLA Library. The incumbent reports directly to the University Librarian and works closely with three other Associate University Librarians and the Deputy University Librarian & Chief Financial Officer.
Amid the dynamic changes taking place in higher education and advanced research, the UCLA Library has developed a new strategic plan to guide us forward. The plan enables us to anticipate and adapt to seismic shifts in our environment by making the most effective use of our resources, providing innovative services and spaces, and becoming an ever more responsive and flexible organization. The AUL for Collections & Scholarly Communication will be a member of the Library's administrative team and will play a vital role in helping us implement our vision for the future.
Each year, the Library's collection of more than twelve million print and electronic volumes is accessed 520,000 times, and our electronic resources are searched 2.36 million times. Our physical footprint encompasses eight libraries across the campus, comprising 772,000 square feet of floor space, visited some four million times annually. Supporting these collections, services, and facilities, an expert team of more than three hundred staff helps users discover and access information, learn in the classroom and beyond, and conduct research that solves some of society's most pressing problems.
The Associate University Librarian for Collections and Scholarly Communication (AUL/C&SC) is a key senior administrator position in the UCLA Library. The AUL/C&SC has leadership, strategic policy and planning, and management responsibilities for the library-wide scholarly communication program and collection management functions, including collection development, cataloging, acquisitions, e-resource licensing and management preservation and oversight of the Southern Regional Library Facility, which provides physical storage and services to the other UC campuses. The AUL fosters a flexible, collaborative work environment, and a strong team spirit, allowing personnel to move easily between sections and departments and across the organization to establish and support creative initiatives and facilitate new partnerships and interdisciplinary projects. The AUL collaborates with other senior administrators, departments, and units throughout the Library and across the campus. The AUL oversees 5 major departments: Scholarly Communication and Licensing; Preservation; Print Acquisitions, Cataloging & Metadata Center and the Southern Regional Library Facility.
The AUL/C&SC is a lead spokesperson at campus, UC system wide, state, national, and international levels for issues and policies relating to building and stewarding collections including digital resources, content acquisition, metadata services, shared print, scholarly communication, and preservation, ensuring that the UCLA Library actively participates in collaborative programs and services, is informed of and influences global publishing trends, and fulfills the Library's fundamental mission of access to a rich and deep array of materials that support UCLA's education and research as well as broad public access to UCLA-generated content and collections.
The AUL directly supervises 4 FTE academic appointees and 1 FTE career staff. The incumbent indirectly supervises 95-110 FTE.
