Founded in 1952, Stevenson School is one of the leading independent boarding and day-schools in the western United States. The position reports to the Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operating Officer (CFO/COO) and has a high public profile at Stevenson—broadly collaborating with and supporting faculty, staff, and administrators at the School. The Director of Human Resources works closely with the CFO to lead, direct, and coordinate all human resource activities including policy development, employment processes and personnel forms, employee benefits and retirement plans, employee relations, state and federal regulatory compliance, compensation, wellness and employee assistance programs, employee orientation, and training and professional development.
Among a broad array of responsibilities, the Director of Human Resources supports the Chief Financial Officer, School President, and senior staff in the recruitment and hiring process. This includes writing and placing ads for exempt and nonexempt classifications and for independent contractors, reviewing resumes, interviewing candidates, checking references and completing background checks, and preparing offers and employment agreements; monitors new employee work authorization, completes 1-9 forms and verifies employment eligibility including work visas and immigration requirements; and develops, implements, and maintains compliance with all applicable employment regulations (FLSA, FMLA, ERISA), Federal and State labor laws, and preparation of the EEO-1 report. The position manages workers' compensation procedures and preparation of annual OSHA reports; monitors and submits insurance claims related to worker's compensation, disability, short-term pregnancy disability and family medical leave, and COBRA administration; oversees the random drug screening program; and participates in risk management processes, including renewal of all insurance policies.
The Director of Human Resources prepares and updates job descriptions; supports the CFO and School President in coordinating salary/benefit compensation comparisons and salary changes; prepares residential agreements; manages payroll for all exempt, non-exempt, and part-time employees, with timely preparation of W2s and payroll-related reports; administers waivers for all students and related activities; and maintains secure and confidential human resources files and records. The Director advises and consults with CFO, School President, senior staff, and outside legal counsel to resolve employee relations issues; oversees and engages in the resolution of delicate personnel matters, and maintains appropriate confidentiality; and seeks at all times to protect the School's best interest. The Director of Human Resources is expected to attend professional conferences, webinars, and workshops to remain current on best practices in human resources and labor laws.
Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree; significant progressive human resources experience; excellent strategic, analytical, and problem-solving ability; and demonstrated organizational and project management skills. The Director must have experience administering 403(b) or 401(k) retirement plans and preparation of Form 5500; thorough knowledge of COBRA, ERISA, FMLA, FLSA, and related state and federal employment regulations; and experience working with legal counsel in areas related to human resources management (e.g., benefits/plan document preparation, wage and hour issues, and complex disciplinary actions); excellent interpersonal and communication skills; comfort with multitasking and working independently with flexibility, adaptability, and a strong attention to detail; and strong computer skills. A master’s degree in human resource management or SPHR/PHR certification is a preferred qualification.
