The University of Virginia, Department of Radiology & Medical Imaging is seeking to hire radiologists to be deployed in Rwanda as part of an initiative established by the Ministry of Health in Rwanda. The Government of Rwanda aims to build a high quality and sustainable health system. Rwanda currently faces a severe lack of adequate number of physicians and other health care workers, and one key root cause of this shortage is lack of adequate number of faculty to train future physicians. There are very few trained sub-specialists, and residency training programs in Rwanda, begun in 2005, are still developing. This initiative with the Human Resources for Health (HRH) is a joint affiliation with the Department of Medical Education at the University of Virginia.
UVa is collaborating with other United States medical schools, such as Harvard, Dartmouth and Duke. The goals of the partnership between the Ministry of Health and the affiliated US schools in the Rwanda HRH consortium include supporting the development of the clinical, teaching, and research skills of current and future faculty and specialist physicians, and supporting the creation of a strong cadre of specialists to meet patient care needs at district, provincial and referral hospitals. This opportunity exists for appointment of 12 months in duration which is strongly preferred, and will be based in Kigali, Rwanda. There will be no employment with UVa after returning from Rwanda.
Candidates must have a MD, be board-certified or eligible in diagnostic radiology, board-certified or board-eligible or in final fellowship year in their respective specialty for sub-specialists. Successful candidates must be able to develop and apply quantitative measurement to promote effective decision-making and continuous organizational improvement. The ability to demonstrate effectively and diplomatically communicate information and data in written and verbal form to top management, government officials, students, and hospital-based colleagues is required. The ability to interpret and apply instructions in diverse settings and proven ability to support organizational change and develop the clinical and management capability of other health professionals is required. Professional experience in cross-cultural and low-income settings is strongly preferred. English proficiency required; French proficiency preferred.
