The University of Connecticut Institute for Systems Genomics and the Department of Allied Health Sciences invites applications for Director for a new Professional Science Masters Graduate Program in Genetics, Genomics and Counseling. This new position, funded through the Institute for Systems Genomics, will support the establishment of the first genetic counseling program in Connecticut, and the first at a New England public institution.

The development of a Professional Science Master's Degree in Genetics, Genomics and Counseling is one of many new initiatives to help UConn realize its aspiration to become a top flagship University recognized for excellence in innovative education and engaged collaborations with state, community, and industry partners.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant faculty dedicated to advancing knowledge through teaching, research, and engaged scholarship. The new graduate Genetics, Genomics and Counseling Program will augment the professional, accredited, and respected undergraduate and graduate training and educational programs in diagnostic and healthcare genetics at the University of Connecticut and within the Institute for Systems Genomics.

Position Summary:

The successful candidate is expected to be a dynamic, collaborative leader with an appreciation for a creative and interdisciplinary approach to learning and to share a deep commitment to effective mentoring of students in scholarship, outreach and professional development. The successful candidate will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; demonstrated leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

The Program Director will lead the development and accreditation of the Professional Science Master's Degree in Genetics, Genomics and Counseling Program. The Program Director will have the primary responsibility for the Program's organization, administration, budget, curriculum, as well as the continuous review and analysis of planning, assessment, and program accreditation. The Program Director will recruit internship training sites, acquire necessary affiliation agreements, and travel to sites as required per Program Accreditation Standards. The Program Director will maintain an active external advisory board and participate in the initiatives of the National Professional Science Masters Association. The successful candidate will teach courses for this program and provide comprehensive academic advising to all matriculated students. The faculty member will be expected to compose web information and update the Program website, coordinate and support conferences, symposiums or meetings for continuing education, and respond to inquiries regarding the Program. The faculty member will participate in recruitment and orientation of new students which may include occasional weekend/evening hours; serve as a resource and maintain cooperative relationships with department faculty and staff, and other university offices, making referrals as appropriate; participate in an active program of professional development consistent with personal and professional goals; serve on department, college and/or university committees; and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Master's degree in genetic counseling or beyond; certification in genetic counseling by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG); at least 5 years of experience as a genetic counselor; teaching experience and evidence of strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

The preferred applicant will have experience with one or more of the following; University course instruction, administration, course development, curricular design, new program development, and program accreditation procedures. Furthermore, the applicant will have demonstrated through coursework, research and/or outreach, the participation of members of under-represented groups as well as the integration of multicultural experiences.

Appointment Terms:

This is a full-time, 11-month, non-tenure track lecturer position with an anticipated start date of January 2017. The successful candidate's primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus in the Department of Allied Health Sciences with assignments within the Institute for Systems Genomics (Storrs and Farmington campus). Travel is required. The salary will be commensurate with academic qualifications and experience.
