Position Summary: Both medical school and graduate school in the biomedical sciences can be a very stressful time for students enrolled in either the MD programs or PhD programs within the School of Medicine. Stress can manifest itself in a number of ways, and often intervention is needed to help students find healthy ways to counteract stress and anxiety. Developing health habits for handling stress is a professional skill that will benefit medical and graduate trainees into their future careers as clinicians and researchers. The Student Wellness Coach reports jointly to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and the Associate Dean for Graduate Education and will have the necessary authority to articulate a strategic vision for championing a healthy environment for all students at the UNC School of Medicine. This environment will promote the development of lifelong skills for achieving and maintaining optimal physical and mental health. The Student Wellness Coach will lead institutional efforts to improve student wellness and burnout prevention, and will develop and implement programs and policies concerning MD and PhD student wellness. This position will act as a liaison to faculty and staff providing guidance and support and will identify needs for program development.
Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree in a Human Services discipline with coursework related to the area of assignment. Licensed Clinical Social Worker certified by the NC Social Work Certification Board.
Qualification and Experience: Must have experience working with adult learners and must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality. Experience in an academic medical center and 2-3 years of experience as a social work practitioner preferred. Familiarity with both MD and biomedical PhD training environments preferred.
