California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is seeking an Associate or Full rank professor and founding Program Director of a developing Masters of Science Physician Assistant (MSPA) Program. The College of Health Sciences and Human Services (CHSHS) at CSUMB seeks to develop the MSPA Program in response to the explicit need for mid-level clinical providers in the tri-county area. The candidate should be prepared to join a group of dedicated and collaborative colleagues in a progressive educational environment where working together is viewed as a benefit and leadership is valued. The MSPA position is offered for a minimum of one-year contingent on ARC-PA and WSCUC accreditation. We seek a Program Director whose professional values and commitment to meeting the health services need of the tri-county region resonate with the CHSHS mission, vision, and guiding principles. CHSHS seeks a Program Director to guide program development, facilitate the promotion and tenure of junior faculty and provide consistent communication between the College administration and MSPA faculty and staff.  The MSPA Program Director will work with faculty to develop curriculum, manage the department budget, manage departmental faculty and staff, and build strong relationships with collaborative partners on campus and in the community.


CHSHS is seeking an individual as MSPA Program Director to provide leadership to the future MSPA Program faculty and staff. Responsibilities include departmental administration, overseeing the accreditation process and compliance with professional organization requirements, teaching, scholarly productivity, university/community service, and maintenance of a positive and productive relationship with the local, regional and state medical communities.

The position is a 12-month, administrative faculty appointment. It is expected/desired that the MSPA Program Director will spend roughly 20% of his/her time engaged in clinical practice with a remaining 80% dedicated to administrative related tasks pertaining to the PA program.

We are looking for a leader with the following characteristics:

Minimum Qualifications

  • An individual who is highly knowledgeable regarding PA program curriculum, health services, administration and practice, and dedicated to meeting the needs of diverse, underserved communities.
  • A leader who has had prior experience with the ARC-PA accreditation process and can work effectively in an environment undergirded by team-based learning and scholarship.
  • A professional with a track record of excellent teaching and a scholar engaged in high impact practices to undergird student success, particularly among the first generation-educated.
  • An experienced masters-educated PA who enjoys mentoring faculty and students in clinical practice and one who can embrace the mission of establishing a new MSPA Program.
  • A leader who values and demonstrates cultural humility and culturally relevant health care practices.
  • Physician Assistant candidates must be a certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) with current NCCPA certification, plus a current license or eligibility as a physician assistant in the State of California. A Master’s Degree from an ARC-PA accredited program is required.
  • Physician candidates must be state licensed or license eligible as an allopathic or osteopathic physician.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with experience in an academic setting, a track record of teaching or participation in preceptorship, success in leadership roles, and five or more years of clinical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An active scholar in the PA field with a track record peer-review publications and presentations.
  • At least three years of faculty leadership experience demonstrative of faculty and student collaboration and mentorship through teaching, research, service, and curriculum development to support MSPA accreditation and the ongoing vitality of the program.
  • Knowledge and experience in providing health care for diverse Latino populations, and other underserved groups who have been historically marginalized and lack access to culturally relevant health care.


In planning for a doubling in size of its population due to state and regional demand, the College of Professional Studies was divided into three colleges in 2014, which included the establishment of the College of Health Sciences and Human Services (CHSHS). The synergy of the Affordable Care Act, coupled with the regional demand for improving health and human services in a historically underserved area, has rendered CHSHS as the fastest growing college in CSUMB.
