The Department of Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering (MAIE) at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for a tenured, Associate or Full Professor to serve as Department Chair effective September 1, 2017. The Chair will oversee a department of fourteen faculty members. The Department of Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering offers degree programs and research opportunities in the manufacturing and industrial engineering fields. The department offers a Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Engineering (BSME), a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (BSET), Master of Science in Engineering (MSE-ME), Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSE-EM). It is expected that doctoral programs to be formed will expand the department substantially.
Our programs prepare students for careers in industry as well as continued study, and our graduates are placed in a wide range of sectors including aerospace, automotive, biomedical, chemical/process, computer, consumer electronics, distribution, defense, energy, environmental, logistics, manufacturing, materials, service, and plastics. Minimum Qualifications: Applicants for the Chair position must possess excellent managerial skills and a record of service and leadership in the field of manufacturing, industrial or systems engineering. The highest consideration will be given to candidates who demonstrate having achieved excellence and balance in teaching, research and service, collaboration with faculty across disciplines and the ability to involve undergraduate and graduate students in research activities. A demonstrated ability to engage external stakeholders from industry and the community are expected. Candidates must meet the institutional requirements for tenure to be considered for the position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in Manufacturing, Industrial, or Systems Engineering, or a closely related field from an ABET accredited university.
Applicants must also have demonstrated evidence of leadership, student mentorship, community and industry engagement, skill in interdisciplinary research and collaboration along with an outstanding research program, including high-profile publications and a successful record of a diverse sources of external funding. Applicants must also have a demonstrated ability and a well-designed plan to develop, promote and maintain a funded research program and to lead multidisciplinary collaborative projects. The applicant should have experience with and commitment to ABET accreditation.
All finalists for the position will be considered for an Endowed Chair Position. The holder of an endowed chair will normally be a tenured faculty member with the rank of Full Professor who has had a distinguished career. In exceptional circumstances, a tenured Associate Professor, with a distinguished career may be appointed for the endowed position. Candidates for an endowed chair position must have a strong scholarly record and substantive evidence of a distinguished career, especially during the three to five years immediately preceding the nomination. A separate search committee will conduct the review of candidates for Endowed Chair Position.
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:The Chair will present and promote a vision for Departmental growth, academic leadership and excellence, and will represent the Department to academia, industry, and government for its continued innovation. Furthermore, the Chair will lead by example, and will actively be engaged in strategic planning that would expand the influence of the Department in the broader academic community both within and outside the university. The Chair will also promote diversity within the Department and the institution.
Preferred Qualifications: The successful candidate for chair will be able to establish doctoral programs, nurture faculty and student-success, develop metrics of performance, collaboratively formulate and implement strategic plans for the department, and move the department forward as a team with the goal assisting the unit to contribute to UTRGV becoming an emerging research university.
The successful candidate is expected to play a leadership role with initiatives in partnership with schools, community colleges, government agencies and industries to create a manufacturing eco-system that will bring economic prosperity to the Rio Grande Valley.

Additional Information: UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
