Instructional Designer II

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks an Instructional Designer II to join the USMx team. Reporting to the USMx Program Director, the Instructional Designer II's primary responsibility is to apply research on and best practices in adult learning theory, pedagogy, assessment techniques, and instructional design in the development and evaluation of online courses, particularly the development of MOOCs on the edX platform. Collaborating with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and others, the Instructional Designer II creates curriculum using a variety of technologies to develop targeted competencies and produce desired learning outcomes.  




  • Lead concurrent instructional design and development projects from start to finish, which includes developing and monitoring project plans and schedules, and managing the workflow of the development process by coordinating the input from faculty, subject matter experts, content experts, editors, graphic artists, programmers, and production staff, and other team members
  • Develop and support best practices, promote engagement, quality assurance, and design standards on the effective use of design strategies, web-based resources, multimedia technologies, accessibility, usability, and instructional software and systems for online course development
  • Direct video production for incorporation in online courses, including coordination of logistical aspects of the production process
  • Create faculty training resources and facilitate faculty development workshops on best practices for online instruction
  • Assess overall curriculum needs, determining course goals, course objectives, and the sequence in which to address them
  • Conduct formative and summative evaluations on the effectiveness of courses and refine them based on assessment data
  • Utilize experience developing a range of course types in a variety of learning management systems (exposure to MOOCs a plus)
  • Exhibit a strong technology background and apply effective pedagogical applications of technology to teaching and learning in a higher educational instructional setting
  • Display a high degree of energy and flexibility in a changing, fast-paced environment
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned                                                                          




  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Five to seven years of experience (or a combination of education and experience) designing instruction and applying principles of adult learning theories and methodologies to assessment, development, delivery, and evaluation               
  • Demonstrated experience with competency-based learning, adaptive learning, and blended learning
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Strong technical skills
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Proven experience as an instructional designer in a higher educational setting
  • Strong project management experience, including knowledge of the instructional systems design process and workflow
  • Demonstrated experience with learning management systems and course creation, including media, accessibility, assessment, and quality assurance
  • Intermediate to advance knowledge of video production, digital formats, conversion, captioning and editing; coordinating logistical aspects of the production process
  • Background in developing training resources and conducting faculty workshops 




• Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or a related field


• Experience working in higher education. Supervisory and project experience
