University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks an Instructional Designer to join the USMx team. Reporting to the USMx Program Director, the Instructional Designer’s primary responsibility is to manage the design and development of online instructional materials for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on the edX platform. The Instructional Designer will work with program chairs, curriculum specialists, content experts, and internal and external course production staff to create new courses/program materials. A significant portion of the Instructional Designer’s duties will be devoted to the design and implementation of MOOC content from UMUC and other system partners.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Manage the workflow of the development process by coordinating the input from content experts, editors, graphic artists, programmers, and production staff, and other team members
  • Apply instructional design techniques to materials, implementing new tools and strategies and appropriate technologies
  • Develop and support best practices, promote engagement, quality assurance, and design standards on the effective use of design strategies, web-based resources, multimedia technologies, accessibility, usability, and instructional software and systems for online course development
  • Assist in video production for incorporation in online courses, including coordination of logistical aspects of the production process
  • Create faculty training resources and assist in faculty development workshops on best practices for online instruction
  • Align curriculum needs, determining course goals, course objectives, and the sequence in which to address them
  • Exhibit a strong technology background and apply effective pedagogical applications of technology to teaching and learning in a higher educational instructional setting
  • Display a high degree of energy and flexibility in a changing, fast-paced environment
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning
• Three (3) years in designing, producing, and/or assuring quality of mediated instructional/training materials
• Experience with HTML and web-based systems and strategies

• Strong project management experience, including knowledge of the instructional systems design process and workflow
• Experience in working with stated deadlines
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
• Strong technical skills
• Experience in designing in a multimedia environment and knowledge of the World Wide Web
• Excellent writing skills

• Demonstrated experience with learning management systems and course creation, including media, accessibility, assessment, and quality assurance

• Intermediate knowledge of video production, digital formats, conversion, captioning and editing, coordinating logistical aspects of the production process

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master's degree in instructional technology or related field
