RESEARCH SPECIALIST B/C
Duties: A Research Specialist B/C position is available immediately in the Circulating Tumor Material Laboratory in the Division of Hematology/Oncology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The project will focus on developing a liquid biopsy for the measurement of single and clustered pancreatic cancer circulating tumor cells and their molecular signatures.
The candidate will participate in the co-development of a novel flow cytometry-based approach for CTC isolation. The candidate will be engaged in a series of activities with genetically engineered mice that develop pancreatic tumors. Responsibilities include: mouse necropsy, performing flow cytometry on mouse blood, cell culture, nucleic acid purification, and basic molecular biology. The candidate will extract genetic material from captured CTCs and conduct downstream molecular analysis in collaboration with the Center for Personalized Diagnostics, other on-campus sequencing cores, and industry partners. The candidate will attend lab meetings as well as participate in manuscript writing, grant writing, and presenting research findings.
Given the highly collaborative nature of this work and the need for coordination with multiple team members and external collaborators, excellent organization and communication skills are critical. Responsibilities will also include some administrative duties such as lab supply inventory, monitoring and calibration of equipment, and organization of data.
The Research Specialist B will be trained to perform the duties described above and once trained will perform the duties under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager.
The Research Specialist C in addition to the aforementioned responsibilities will be involved in more complex experiments and data analysis and will independently perform the duties describe above with limited supervision.
Position is contingent on continued funding.
Qualifications: Research Specialist B: Bachelor's Degree and at least 1 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Proficiency in some of the skills listed above, including multi-parameter flow cytometry, mouse handling, cell culture, nucleic acid purification, basic molecular biology techniques, and blood processing is highly desirable. Computer proficiency, with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint is preferred. Previous experience with genomic analysis, bioinformatics, and medical terminology is a plus. Demonstrated communication and organizational skills required.
