The Department of Counseling and Psychological Services at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position.

Description of Responsibilities:  Will teach graduate classes in the Counseling and Psychological Services Department’s Mental Health Counselor preparation program. Specifically, this position will teach at the SUNY Oswego Metro Center in downtown Syracuse, with the possibility of teaching at our main campus in Oswego. Teaching expectations will cover a variety of areas as needed, including courses such as counseling theory and techniques, group methods, counselor orientation, and internship/practicum/supervision. Will also oversee the administration of the Mental Health Counseling program at the Metro Center including course planning and field placement oversight. 

In addition, this position will be expected to display a demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship, commitment to undergraduate and/or graduate education, and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum ABD in counseling or related field, with expectation of completion within one year of appointment
  • Licensure or License eligibility in New York as a counselor
  • Strong counselor identity
  • Evidence of professionalism in working with diverse populations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned Doctorate in a counseling related field
  • New York State Licensure as an Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
  • Graduate from a Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs                         (CACREP) approved program
  • Ability to teach in two or more of the eight (8) CACREP areas
  • Membership in, and experience with, professional organizations at the state and national levels
  • Experience teaching in a college setting

Description of Department:  The CPS Department is housed within the NCATE-accredited School of Education and prepares graduate level students in one of three programs. The Mental Health Counseling Program prepares students to work in agency settings and leads toward New York State Licensure as a Mental Health Counselor. The Mental Health Counseling Program is CACREP accredited. The Counseling Services Program primarily prepares students to work as school counselors. The School Psychology Program is nationally accredited by NASP and prepares school psychologists. The CPS Department has a long-standing reputation for developing high caliber professionals in these areas.
