The Department of Finance, Banking and Insurance invites applications for a position at the Lecturer level beginning in the Fall 2017 semester.


The Department of Finance, Banking and Insurance includes 15 full-time finance, insurance, and law faculty serving approximately 325 undergraduate majors. The department also provides classes for the MBA and other graduate programs.


Appalachian State University, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, is one of 16 universities in the University of North Carolina system. The university has been ranked consistently by US News and World Report as one of the top 15 among southern regional universities. There are approximately 18,000 students, primarily in bachelors and masters programs in both liberal arts and applied fields. Minimum qualifications for the position include the following:

  • a graduate degree in business or in a field related to employee benefits (e.g., MBA, JD),
  • knowledge and experience directly related to employee benefits programs and the ability to effectively teach a series of courses in employee benefits,
  • the ability to effectively teach other courses within the Department of Finance, Banking, and Insurance (finance, law, or insurance courses with preference for finance courses), and
  • strong interpersonal and communication skills.

In addition to the above requirements, the following qualifications are desired:

  • experience teaching at the college level, and
  • professional designations relevant to teaching areas (e.g., GBA, CPCU, CFP, CFA).
