Stanford University School of Medicine (SoM) was founded in 1858 with a mission to be a premier research-intensive medical school that improves health through leadership, diversity, and a collaborative approach to discovery and innovation in patient care, education, and research. Reporting to Stanford Medicine's Senior Director, Brand Strategy, the Director of Strategic Communications will assist in the development and implementation of the overall marketing and communications strategy and plan for Stanford Medicine—helping to advance its position as a global leader in academic medicine. S/he will write and edit communication materials on behalf of the Dean; ensure that the priorities and initiatives of the Dean are understood and advanced; and advise the Senior Director, Brand Strategy on strategy, priorities, and communications that will enhance the Office of the Dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine.
- Focus and drive external PR activities, specifically media relations, and uncover Stanford opportunities internally. Over time, revisit the PR plan and continuously monitor the value of activities ensuring they serve strategic vision and deliver agreed upon results.
- Draft and edit critical communications for a wide variety of audiences including speeches, remarks, presentations, briefings, backgrounders, reports, op-eds, high-level correspondence, and website content for the Dean of Stanford University School of Medicine and for Stanford Medicine broadly, targeting both internal and external audiences (such as faculty, alumni, prospective students, staff, and business leaders).
- Work with the Senior Director, Brand Strategy to revisit the overall marketing communications plan supporting Stanford's positioning as a leader in Precision Health; gather additional input from team, conduct research, and hold brainstorm sessions if needed to enhance and update the plan.
- Refine and potentially revise the approach to evaluating the Dean's public speaking opportunities (both speeches and appearances); with input from the team and the Dean, develop standard processes and procedures to help direct and support decision making.
- Determine a media strategy and outreach plan. Work with Stanford Medicine PR partners to execute on media strategy and outreach plans. Oversee PR partners in their execution.
- Establish and foster relationships with key Stanford Medicine constituencies, such as top faculty and student leadership groups. Develop programs and projects that support the priorities of these groups while promoting the overarching vision and values of the Dean and Stanford Medicine. Identify and leverage communications and media opportunities at Stanford.
- Work closely with the Senior Director, Brand Strategy, Writer, Strategic Communications Manager, and Brand Manager to ensure all messaging is cohesive and supports the Dean's Precision Health vision.
With more than 2,600 faculty and other teaching titles, each providing a unique mix of research, education, and patient care effort, organized in 28 academic departments and 9 interdisciplinary institutes and centers, supported by more than 3,500 staff, educating 3,000 students, postdoctoral fellows, clinical residents/fellows, and trainees, and collectively generating about $2.3B in revenues, the School of Medicine is Stanford's largest school and truly a complex organization.

- Proven success in writing for publication in print, web, and other platforms.
- Experience in writing about academic medicine and/or the biosciences for lay audiences.
- Experience in writing for and/or managing executive and/or employee communications programs.
- Experience in managing complex projects within large organizations.
- Knowledge of the academic environment and faculty culture, particularly of academic medical centers.
- Ability to understand complex materials and synthesize across multiple sources to produce materials for diverse audiences.
- Ability to change voice and writing style to fit a particular audience and purpose.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple deadlines.
Bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

- Excellent written communication skills, outstanding research and analytical skills, and skills in conceptual editing, copy editing, and proof reading.
