The role of the Stanford Real Estate office (“SRE”) is to invest and optimize the risk-adjusted value of Stanford University's income-producing lands and deploy real estate expertise and solutions to meet existing and evolving University priorities. The Stanford Real Estate office manages $4.5 billion in local non-academic real estate assets of over 14 million building square feet. Stanford Real Estate is a department within Land, Buildings and Real Estate (LBRE), governed by the Stanford Management Company Board of Directors and Stanford Board of Trustees. Stanford Real Estate plays an important role in supporting the University's teaching, learning, and research missions by providing financial support for Stanford University. The Stanford Real Estate is seeking to hire a Real Estate Associate reporting to the Managing Director, Asset Management - Stanford Research Park. This is a full-time three-year fixed-term position.


The Stanford Real Estate Associate (“Associate”) is responsible for a variety of analytical and project management duties in the Stanford Real Estate office. The Associate will work directly with the Managing Directors and Directors of the Real Estate office on the annual portfolio valuation effort, acquisitions of strategic assets, dispositions of non-core holdings, and entitlement/development projects. The Associate's primary responsibilities include building discounted cash flow models and performing sensitivity analyses to evaluate real estate opportunities, preparing and editing pro forma analyses of potential developments, determining the annual valuation of all real estate assets managed by SRE, preparing investment strategy materials and performance reports for the Stanford Management Company Board of Directors, miscellaneous presentations, and assisting with the due diligence of investments and dispositions. The Associate will participate in structuring complex transactions involving Stanford's real estate, including ground lease extensions, dispositions and buybacks, new developments, and strategic leasing arrangements. This is an ideal position to experience all phases of the real estate investment, development and asset management process. It is a three-year position, reporting directly to the Director of the Stanford Research Park. Prior SRE Associates have continued on to top-tier graduate business schools after their employment at SRE.

QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor's degree and minimum two years work experience, preferably in the investment banking, real estate finance, or management consulting industries. A strong understanding of NPV/IRR calculations, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to think analytically are part of the daily requirements of the position. The candidate should have some grounding in real estate investment concepts and an ability to learn new concepts quickly. As the Associate will interact with senior University officials, local government staffers, external consultants, and third-party investors, he/she must exhibit extremely effective interpersonal skills and the ability to interpret and relate University policies and regulatory controls to project objectives. Proficiency in Excel is essential; experience with Power Point and other software packages, such as Argus, to produce analysis, graphics and presentations is preferred. The Associate must be a self-starter who can work independently, communicate effectively, and prioritize, all with minimal supervision and under tight deadlines. Accuracy, attention to detail and high work standards are required.
