As a member of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), the Research Safety Specialist is expected to work closely with faculty, staff, and students in research and teaching laboratories to provide health and safety support for research design, problem solving, identification and promulgation of best practices, training, and compliance assistance.
In addition to providing routine EH&S program services, staff provide support as needed during University emergencies. All EH&S staff are to comply with governmental regulations and University policies and procedures regarding health and safety and are expected to serve as strong models and advocates for research health and safety.


Under limited supervision, staff are to perform moderately complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to aid faculty and researchers in conducting safe research and laboratory course instruction. Primary goals include, but are not limited, to identification and mitigation of research hazards, accident prevention, as well as compliance with the University's environmental, health, and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements.


  • Develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of faculty, staff, and students in research and teaching labs.
  • Provide training and education to researchers regarding potential research hazards to prevent unsafe experimental conditions.
  • Providing consultations in experimental design processes, procedures, and operating laboratory and shop equipment to minimize research hazard potential.
  • Supporting technical investigation of laboratory incidents and concerns involving potential hazards or unsafe experimental conditions.
  • Conducting comprehensive, independent compliance assurance reviews of environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures; and preparing accompanying safety evaluations, management reports, and other relevant documentation.
  • Representing campus interests during field compliance inspections by local regulatory agencies.
  • May act as a lead or technical expert, and provide direction to less experienced personnel working on health/safety programs.

    Education and Experience:
  • At a minimum, BA/BS in natural or physical science.
  • At minimum, 2 years of health and safety experience and/or research experience with demonstrable health and safety responsibilities.

  • Master's or terminal degree in chemistry strongly desired. Advanced degrees in engineering sciences, environmental sciences, biomedical, or related disciplines also considered.
  • Health and safety work experience in an academic research environment.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of chemistry laboratory techniques with experience in developing/ evaluating experimental design and laboratory Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Understanding of the academic research environment and culture.
  • Technical proficiencies in one or more of the following: Process safety, compressed gas/electrical systems design and fabrication, shop machinery, or similar technical specialty.
  • Working knowledge of occupational health and safety principles and applications;

    - Proficiency to recognize and assess health and safety hazards;
    - Demonstrated ability to conduct laboratory/ shop health and safety surveys;
    - Familiarity with environmental and occupational health and safety laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.

  • Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.
  • Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.
  • Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's license.
