The Science Department offers three bachelors degrees (B.S., Biology, Forensic Science and Medical Science).  The ideal candidate will have student-centered learning/teaching and practical experience in two or more of these areas of concentration.  Student research under the direction of a faculty mentor is an essential part of the learning process in our increasingly diverse, women’s undergraduate program.

A Ph.D. in Biology (or equivalent discipline) from an accredited institution is required. Successful teaching and practical experience with active learning and alternative teaching pedagogies in the Biological Sciences at the undergraduate and graduate levels is required.  Experience with teaching introductory to advanced laboratory based courses with small class sizes and frequent student interaction required.  Demonstration of operational skills to support laboratory instrumentation is required.  Candidates are required to submit a Teaching Philosophy statement.  Experience with mentoring and supervising student research projects preferred.

This is a full-time, 9-month, faculty position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach a minimum of eight (8) courses (24 credits) annually to include undergraduate and select graduate courses.
  • Support undergraduate research activities, encouraging students to be fully engaged in the learning process.
  • Academic and career advising of students.
  • Assist in curriculum development.
  • Remain active in research/scholarship.
  • Maintain scheduled on campus office hours according to University policy.
  • Attend faculty, department and college meetings.
  • Assist the admissions office with student recruitment by participating in Open Houses and other admissions events, calling and writing prospective students and other activities as requested.
  • Maintain an active presence on the campus including attendance at major University events (e.g. Commencement, Academic Convocation) and student events.
  • Participate in University committees as assigned.
  • Stay current with best practices in teaching and learning.
  • Understand the role of assessment in achieving specifically stated learning outcomes.
  • Incorporate technology to enhance student learning.  
  • A commitment to active learning strategies, mentoring students, and collaborative scholarship, as well as flexibility in teaching different types of students.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Ph.D. in Natural Science fields.
  • Technical expertise/certifications associated with the Natural Science disciplines.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to adhere to University policies and procedures.
  • Should be committed to a culture of diversity, respect and inclusion.
