Smith College is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in Professor Will Williams’ experimental atomic physics laboratory and mentor graduate and undergraduate students. The research focuses on high precision spectroscopy of the neutral beryllium isotope chain as a test of fundamental theories. This is a one year, grant-funded position with the possibility of renewal.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct specific research focusing on high precision spectroscopy of the neutral beryllium isotope chain as a test of fundamental theories. The goals of the project are to improve the experimental accuracy of several key energy levels for the neutral beryllium isotope chain to assist in developing multi-electron theoretical models, test quantum electrodynamics (QED), and help determine the nuclear charge radius of beryllium.

Assist in writing of research manuscripts and external grant proposals. Participate in research group activities.  There are teaching opportunities available for the successful candidate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: PhD in experimental atomic physics.

Skills: Experience in spectroscopy and laser stabilization is strongly recommended.
