Residence Life at CU Boulder is now welcoming applications for an Associate Director for Student Engagement. The Associate Director for Student Engagement is a twelve month, live-out professional exempt position. Some of the focal responsibilities of the Associate Director for Student Engagement will include working to streamline our student interaction and leadership initiatives on campus. This position will also lead the innovative efforts around our community center (front desk) operations, and change our customer service training with student staff. The Associate Director for Student Engagement will also supervise the Assistant Director for Leadership Development to assist with the advising initiatives, as well as the Assistant Director for Community Development to further assist in customer services models created by the Associate Director for Student Engagement. The Associate Director for Student Engagement position will be part of the leadership team that leads the day to day operations of the residence hall program which includes 24 residence hall buildings, 7,000 residents, 50+ professional staff, 500+ student staff and a vibrant Residence Hall Association. The program also has intentional designs in the areas of student engagement, academic initiatives, innovation, and student leadership. The Residence Life program is a unit within the Housing & Dining Services (HDS) department on the University of Colorado Boulder campus.



What your key responsibilities will be:

Student Development Oversight:
  • Direct programs that accelerate the academic, engagement, and leadership skills for all resident students at the university.
  • Oversee and implement a student development model for the residence hall experience.
  • Create an inclusive residence hall environment conducive to academic growth and development.
  • Advocate student concerns to the university and community populations.
  • Oversee the student leadership programs and initiatives including, Residence Hall Association, National Residence Hall Honorary.
  • Lead the development of Hall Council programs and Community Center programming.
  • Provide support for the Office of Student Conduct in the administration of the student conduct process for residence hall students.
  • Oversee the overall training process for residence life student staff.
  • Leas residence life efforts related to physical and mental health and partners with student affairs departments to provide a counselor-in residence program within the residence halls.
  • Lead the unit to engage and involve students in a variety of programs in the residence halls, and develops referral processes for students to programs within Student Affairs.

Human Resource Management:
  • Lead implementation of processes to recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate highly talented, student affairs focused staff at all position levels of Residence Life.
  • Supervise and conduct performance reviews for two professional Assistant Directors.
  • Supervise Administrative Program Assistant(s) for residence life.
  • Assists the hiring process for all residence life staff.
  • Ensure that all federal, state, university, and departmental hiring procedures are followed.

Strategic Planning, Leadership, and Assessment:
  • Provide exceptional leadership for all professional and student staff, strategic planning, Provide exceptional leadership for all professional and student staff, strategic planning, implementation, and assessment, all assigned initiatives, and all committee work in Residence Life, Housing & Dining Services, and the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the Residence Life 3-year Strategic Plan and provide on-going updates on implementation of strategic plan initiatives.
  • Assist in the implementation and interpret benchmarking and community surveys for residence life.
  • Guide staff in gaining a clear understanding and articulation of the mission, values, and strategic goals of the unit and Housing & Dining Services Strategic Plan.
  • Share leadership, vision creation, resources, and strategic implementation in the pursuit of campus initiatives.
  • Act as representative of Residence Life, Housing & Dining Services, and Student Affairs on campus.

Emergency Response:
  • Direct and evaluate emergency and crisis responses.
  • Provide crisis management assistance through immediate response and follow-up.
  • Create and manage policies and procedures that provide timely and comprehensive response to physical, psychological, and medical emergencies twenty-four hours per day during the academic year.
  • Serve in on-call roles and responsibilities.
  • Participate as a member of the HDS Emergency Management Operations Group.
  • Lead Residence Life staff in crisis and emergency response and be able to respond to campus in crisis situations within 30 minutes.

External Relations:
  • Provide excellent support and leadership to all external stakeholders through service minded attention to the broader housing, student affairs, and university missions.
  • Serve and lead student affairs committees as assigned.
  • Interface with parents regarding concerns for students in the halls.
  • Support conference services operations.
  • Assist in response to university initiatives as related to residence hall operations.
  • Assist in campus retention and enrollment management efforts.

Operations and Administration:
  • Guide the residence life initiatives to create a seamless operational and administrative environment that exceeds student needs and expectations.
  • Chair departmental committees and represent the department to the university and Boulder community committees as assigned.
  • Oversee day to day residential operations including move-in processes; check-out processes and semester break operations.
  • Assist in the implementation of business continuity plan for residence life and coordinates emergency protocols and response.
  • Serve as a residence life liaison to various Housing and Dining Services units.
  • Communicate and assist with facility concerns and utility outages.

Fiscal Resource Management:
  • Administrate all fiscal processes with maximum integrity and timeliness.
  • Follow all federal, state, university and departmental budget procedures.
  • Assist in maintaining residence life budgets and fiscal responsibilities.
  • Allocate budget dollars to support strategic initiatives.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Take initiative through intentional relationship development and leadership in university, state, regional, and national organizations.
  • Network with administration and student affairs departments on campus.
  • Participate in and contribute to state, regional, and national professional associations.
  • Network with student affairs and housing departments from other universities.
  • Create and participate in professional development opportunities.
  • Assist in a variety of Housing & Dining Services initiatives and programs as needed.
  • Work occasional nights or weekends as needed to meet unit objectives.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned to meet departmental and university needs.

Qualifications

What we require:
  • Master's degree in Student Affairs and Higher Education or related field.
  • At least eight years of experience that demonstrates progressively responsible organizational authority in a residence life/housing program.
  • Experience supervising professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Experience with student leadership advisement.
  • Experience with development of student engagement initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience with student conduct, crisis intervention and emergency response.
  • Experience with analyzing and resolving conflict, team building, group dynamics, crisis management and problem solving skills.
