Job Summary:
This class describes the third-level technician. Although positions carry out defined work procedures and processes, judgment is required on an ongoing basis to select the most appropriate technical guidelines and adapt them to accomplish the tasks. Positions continually determine practical solutions to problems by applying specific processes, techniques, and methods.

Decision Making - The decisions regularly made are at the defined level, as described here. Within limits prescribed by the operation, choices involve selecting alternatives that affect the manner and speed with which tasks are carried out. These choices do not affect the standards or results of the operation itself because there is typically only one correct way to carry out the operation. Alternatives include independent choice of such things as priority and personal preference for organizing and processing the work, proper tools or equipment, speed, and appropriate steps in the operation to apply. By nature, the data needed to make decisions can be numerous but are clear and understandable so logic is needed to apply the prescribed alternative. Positions can be taught what to do to carry out assignments and any deviation in the manner in which the work is performed does not change the end result of the operation.

Complexity - The nature of, and need for, analysis and judgment is patterned, as described here. Positions study technical information to determine what it means and how it fits together in order to get practical solutions to problems and tasks. Guidelines in the form of specified processes, techniques, and methods exist for most situations. Judgment is needed in locating and selecting the most appropriate of these guidelines which may change for varying circumstances as the task is repeated. This selection and interpretation of guidelines involves choosing from alternatives where all are correct but one is better than another depending on the given circumstances of the situation.

Line/Staff Authority - The direct field of influence the work of a position has on the organization is as an individual contributor, work leader, or unit supervisor. The individual contributor may explain work processes and train others. The individual contributor may serve as a resource or guide by advising others on how to use processes within a system or as a member of a collaborative problem-solving team.

Position Emphasis:

This full-time, University Staff (non-classified) position is responsible for database management in the Division of Surgical Oncology. The purpose of this database is to collect retrospective and prospective data in order to determine outcomes, the impact of multi-disciplinary approaches, treatment variables, data pertaining to demographics, health history, etc. This Database Coordinator will work with investigators in order to utilize databases for research projects, maintain databases and validate the quality of the data. This position will develop a system for tracking data, for follow up information such as morbidity and mortality, as well as missing data. This position will help train staff, prepare data for analysis and help with presentation material.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring salary for this position is commensurate with skills and experience. This position is eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Three (3) years of general clerical experience, which included one (1) year of experience working with MS Excel and database management.

Substitution: College or university course work appropriate to the work assignment, may substitute on a year for year basis for the general clerical experience, but not for the specific technical experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in business or science related field from an accredited institution.
  • Experience with database management and programming in MS Access and/or MS SQL.
  • Experience working in an academic and/or health care environment.


Competencies/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding of relational databases, data and file types.
  • Knowledge of MS Excel, MS Access, queries, functions and macros, advance form and report design skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential material with discretion.
  • Excellent interpersonal and general communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction or supervision.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology to understand documents related to the patient chart and related forms.
  • Interest in Public Health.
