ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Director of Marketing and Communications for Development and Alumni Relations plans, creates and implements consistent and comprehensive marketing and communications strategies and materials that build awareness, understanding, participation and support among internal and external audiences for the University of South Alabama's (USA) development efforts, alumni and constituent relations, and fund-raising initiatives. The Director will work independently to carry out strategic marketing and communications objectives through planning and production of Development and Alumni Relations marketing and communications.

This Director of Marketing and Communications reports to the University of South Alabama's Executive Director for Marketing and Communications, who sets overall goals for campus branding, marketing and communications. The Director has additional reporting responsibilities to the Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations.  The Director is the liaison between the USA Office of Marketing and Communications and the USA Division of Development and Alumni Relations, ensuring the mission and strategic goals of the Development and Alumni Relations team are met within the overall context of the University's central branding and marketing strategies.

Essential functions include works with the Development and Alumni Relations staff to evaluate current communications; creates and implements a comprehensive integrated communications plan, calendar and budget (to include annual giving, planned giving, major gifts and alumni relations), that strategically advances the mission and goals of  Development and Alumni Relations and directly connects development efforts to the University's strategic goals and overall institutional marketing and branding; collaborates with departments throughout campus  and USA Health to understand and generate support for specific institutional needs; integrates advancement communication efforts throughout campus and USA Health to ensure consistency of messages and effective timing of fundraising efforts; collaborates with USA Board of Trustees members to ensure their understanding of, and support for, marketing and communication campaigns related to fundraising; coordinates writing, photography, design and production of newsletters, magazines and other publications; acts as editorial director for USA's annual Honor Roll of Donors, including selection of theme in collaboration with development officers and coordinating donor lists; coordinates editorial management of SOUTH National Alumni Association magazine and other print and electronic communications; develops and coordinates a strategic communications plan for development and alumni relations social media accounts; works with design, public relations, and communications consultants and vendors, as needed in accordance with the communications strategies and needs of the office of Development and Alumni Relations; within the context of the strategic communications plan for Development and Alumni Relations, creates, writes and oversees production and design of electronic communications, website copy, video, print brochures, newsletters, direct mail, booklets, case statements, presentations and other collateral materials that will generate response and support for development initiatives, alumni programs, annual fund, planned giving and major gifts; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required; related duties as required.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree communications, marketing, journalism, public relations or related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and seven years of professional experience in marketing and communications, development communications, public relations, or alumni affairs. 

Demonstrated expertise in planning, creating, writing and supervising design of a wide range of marketing communications materials (experience in nonprofit fund-raising preferred). Experience in supervising the production of a wide range of print materials from concept through completion is required. Experience managing electronic communications, and setting digital and social media strategic goals within broader context of development and alumni relations goals is required.  Ability to operate personal computers and related software, focusing on word processing, desktop publishing, graphic design, and editing. Experience with  fundraising database software preferred.  Flexibility to handle the needs of a fast-paced office and the special needs of donors, and to collaborate with internal and external constituents, is required.
