Smith College seeks an Assistant Director for Faculty Analytics to develop and sustain the analytic infrastructure for decision-making about faculty compensation. Steward faculty and instructional staff data in the service of academic business intelligence; develop and oversee the budget, reporting, and analytic processes that sustain Smith’s success in hiring, retention, and support of faculty and instructional staff throughout the lifecycle.
Faculty Salary Budget Management: Develop and maintain information systems that enable the provost and associate dean to model, forecast, analyze, and manage the faculty salary and course support budgets that enable the delivery of Smith’s curriculum. Support the provost’s office in effectively tracking and communicating about the faculty budget to key internal and external constituencies. Collaborate closely with Smith’s budget office, HR, and data warehouse team to ensure that relevant information is secure, accurate, and consistent across systems.
Faculty Lifecycle Management: Serve as the primary analyst supporting decision-making about the size, shape, and lifecycle of Smith’s faculty and instructional staff. Develop analyses and visualizations that inform leadership’s resource allocation and planning efforts with accurate, timely, and relevant data. These analyses span a wide range of subjects including budget, demographics, productivity, compensation, equity, curriculum, and other issues that may arise. Prepare responses to external data requests including AAUP, CDS, IPEDS, COFHE, and peer salary analyses. Collaborate effectively with data stewards in related areas such as registrar, budget, and HR.
Faculty Data Steward: Design, manage, and lead the ongoing development of accurate data structures supporting budget and lifecycle management efforts. Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, oversee the operational and analytic data structures that facilitate effective decision-making, accurate recordkeeping, and business processes related to faculty data. Oversee data governance for faculty data including developing and implementing a clear and effective system for appropriate access to data that includes legally, ethically, and institutionally sensitive information. Lead regular data migrations when new enterprise platforms are adopted.
Faculty Compensation: Implement budgetary decisions through allocating compensation based on directives from the associate provost and provost. Produce accurate documentation, including annotated appointment letters, for instructional employees. Coordinate with budget and HR analysts to ensure that actions related to instructional employees are accurately reflected in core systems to support payroll, budget, and benefit processes. Prepare data for existing budget planning system. Maintain extracts of institutional data that support responses to internal queries and external reporting requirements, including AAUP and IPEDS. Safeguard the security of faculty and instructional staff data.
Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree and at minimum of 5 years of experience in research and/or data warehousing and higher education business intelligence, preferably working with faculty data or an equivalent combination of education/experience. Master’s degree preferred. Experience with faculty data systems and analytic tools is required; specific experience in Banner, Cognos, and Tableau are preferred.
Skills: Strong technical, statistical, analytic, and data management skills, as well as a track record of developing analytics and reports that are useful to non-technical managers. Experience working successfully with confidential information and maintaining security over PII, preferably with specific experience designing and managing processes for security and data governance. Successful track record in collaborating with a range of constituencies including the president’s cabinet, HR, FIN, IT, fellow analysts and data stewards, and technical colleagues.
