Posting Summary:
The UVa School of Medicine is looking for a Research Data Specialist in the Health Sciences Library. The position will be a member of the Health Sciences Library's Research and Data Services team providing data management services to support health related research for faculty, staff, and students. The Research Data Specialist will collaborate with Library colleagues to stay abreast of current and anticipated data needs and develop and provide support services throughout the research process. The Specialist will also partner with multiple stakeholders to coordinate the provision of data-related services via pan-university initiatives such as the UVA BioConnector, Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (THRIV), and Computation and Data Resource Exchange (CADRE).

This position will support researchers (faculty, staff, and students) engaged in biomedical research by providing computational research support. The data specialist will provide consultations on cleaning, manipulating, visualizing and analyzing data by writing and and/or optimizing programs and applications in R, Python, or other freely available products. The incumbent will also provide guidance on technical data management issues, including acquisition, transfer, and storage of data.

The specialist will also develop and provide educational opportunities to support researchers at all proficiency levels, assessing needs, coordinate learning opportunities, and actively marketing content. The incumbent will develop a roster of workshops and online modules to provide hands-on training in technical data management, analysis, and statistics, both leading these sessions and also recruiting appropriate instructors to provide content.

The candidate should have a Master's degree in Computer, Information, Data Science, or, academic discipline with quantitative research experience. The incumbent will also have excellent communication skills, demonstrated flexibility with the ability to work independently and on teams, a desire to provide highly responsive user-centered services, and have interest in providing instruction (both formal and informal) to varying audiences and skill levels.

The successful candidate will be proficient with one or more open source computational environments, either R or Python.

Preference will be given to those who have a working knowledge of Information security as it pertains to data acquisition, curation, storage and retrieval, data authority, privileges and usage rights for data sets in the library and externally available, data sharing approaches and techniques for both internal and external sharing, and basic statistical concepts and methods.

This position is restricted and contingent upon the continuation of funding.
