Professional Research Assistant



Nature of Work:

The Department of Bioengineering and the Barbara Davis Center at the Anschutz Medical campus is seeking applicants for a full time Professional Research Assistant (PRA) / Laboratory technician. The successful candidate will assist and work on projects exploring the mechanisms regulating hormone secretion from the pancreatic islet, its dysfunction during the development of diabetes, and methods to improve islet function in both diabetes and islet transplantation. The laboratory is especially focused on developing and applying quantitative live cell imaging techniques and studying the electrical regulation of the islet.

Responsibilities include:

  • To develop and assist current research projects being performed by investigators within the laboratory as required. Examples include live cell imaging (Ca2+, GFP) of pancreatic islets and understanding the precise regulation of insulin secretion and disruptions in diabetes. Successful candidates may develop their own research projects in this or other areas.
  • To work with students and other researchers to support current and future laboratory needs. After an initial training period duties will include:
    • Maintaining and organizing transgenic mouse colony, including documenting colony, managing breedings, weaning mice and genotyping.
    • Assist in performing physiological assays of glucose homeostasis (IP injection, blood collection, glucose monitoring) and associated hormone assays (ELISA).
    • Performing experimental analysis on tissue samples form mouse models or patients with diabetes, including immunofluorescence, western blot, PCR and immunoprecipitaiton.
    • Assist in dissections of pancreatic islet tissue and islet transplantations.
  • Play a central role in the regular maintenance of the laboratory. Duties include maintaining and ordering stocks of lab consumables and reagents, overseeing the general upkeep of clean glassware and durable laboratory items (~10% time).
  • Staying up to date on current laboratory technologies, serve as the primary point of contact in the lab for industry representatives, university regulatory bodies, finding cost effective solutions to project needs and providing information in support of current and future budgeting (~10% time).

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications, Education/Experience/Skills:

  • BA/BS in biological sciences or physical sciences (e.g. biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemistry, etc.).


Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience and familiarity with biochemical and molecular biology techniques, such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, cell culture, immunofluorescence, western blot.
  • Experience in biomedical lab research.
  • Willingness to work with and handle animals and animal tissue, as well as human tissue.
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Self motivation and ability to work independently and in groups.
