Social Media and Journalism Professor (Open Rank)
The Department of Journalism in the College of Media, Communication and Information (CMCI) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor, or a tenured associate or full professor in Social Media and Journalism, beginning August 2017.
The department has developed a new curriculum, including a new multi-platform, production-based capstone course; offers on-site graduate programs; an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program; and is developing online graduate programs. We're looking for an extraordinary new colleague who demonstrates a record of excellence with research and teaching experience at the nexus of social media and journalism. We seek someone with research and teaching experience utilizing data, analytics, mobile media, interactive news platforms, community/audience feedback, and a clear understanding of how to gather, verify, and disseminate information across social platforms.
The CMCI opened in the fall of 2015. It is the first new college at CU in more than 50 years, and is designed for collaborations among faculty and students across the College and in related fields. The Journalism program, nationally accredited since 1948, offers bachelor's and master's degrees, and participates in a multidisciplinary Ph.D. program with a track in Journalism Studies. It is the home of NewsTeam Boulder (a semiweekly local, student news broadcast), the web-based CU Science Update, the CU News Corps (where faculty guide students in long-form investigative work), the internationally acclaimed Center for Environmental Journalism, CU Sports Mag (a weekly sports broadcast), and numerous other journalism projects. The department offers certificate programs in International Media and Sports Journalism, and is interested in developing more in areas such as political communication and visual communication. The College also houses the Center for Media, Religion, and Culture. For more information, visit http://www.colorado.edu/cmci/ .
A Ph.D. in Journalism, Media Studies, Communication or a related field is preferred; ABD or a master's degree with significant professional experience is acceptable. Candidates at an assistant professor level must have the potential to be tenurable, and candidates at the associate or full professor level must have a record that would warrant tenure in the CMCI; the college grants tenure based upon a successful record of scholarly research, creative work, or a combination thereof. We are seeking individuals whose work not only encompasses journalism, but should ideally also align with other CMCI departments including Media Studies; Communication; Advertising, Public Relations and Media Design; Information Science; Critical Media Practices; and/or Intermedia Art, Writing and Performance.
