NATURE OF THE WORK:

The University of Colorado School of Medicine seeks a Chief of Service for the Section of Pediatric Anesthesiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine on the Anschutz Medical Campus. This individual will lead the clinical, educational, research, and other programmatic missions of this large and dynamic Section of the Department of Anesthesiology and will serve as the medical staff department head of Pediatric Anesthesiology at The Children's Hospital of Colorado



DESCRIPTION OF THE SECTION OF PEDIATRIC ANESTHESIOLOGY

Overview

The Section of Pediatric Anesthesiology (the Section) is a dynamic and robust arm of the Department of Anesthesiology, employing 55 attending faculty members and 29 advanced practice anesthesia providers who are responsible for staffing anesthetizing locations for Children's Hospital Colorado. The Section is responsible for upholding the Department Mission statement, where faculty "strive to develop outstanding clinicians and investigators who are lifelong learners, who will provide the highest quality compassionate care, be the leaders in innovation and who will serve the needs of our community and the world in the best traditions of our profession." To this end, the Section of Pediatric Anesthesiology places strong emphasis on bolstering the four pillars of the Department's mission statement: innovative and successful educational programs, groundbreaking research, clinical excellence and citizenship.

Clinical Activities



The primary clinical site for the Section is Children's Hospital Colorado (CHCO). This premier hospital, which has been ranked among top five in the country for almost two decades, is a 553-bed tertiary care children's hospital located on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. CHCO has a level IV NICU and is the only level 1 pediatric trauma center in Colorado. With 4 hospitals, 16 network of care locations and more than 500 outreach clinics in over 29 cities, the CHCO network serves the children of Colorado and surrounding regions. In service of CHCO, the Section is made up of a multidisciplinary team of highly trained pediatric anesthesia experts that carries out more than 27,000 anesthesia procedures per year, specializing in the unique needs of children undergoing surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Subspecialty services available include cardiac anesthesia, acute and chronic pain services, Level I trauma coverage with three 24-hour in-hospital anesthesia providers, transplant anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, anesthesia for fetal interventions, and anesthesia care for children with rare pediatric conditions, such as epidermolysis bullosa and mucopolysaccharidosis. The section is a leader in a comprehensive and multidisciplinary pain management program. The pain group is held in high regard and works collaboratively with CHCO surgeons, medical specialists, nurses, and referring community physicians. In addition, the Section plays a critical role with the Colorado Institute for Maternal and Fetal Health, providing anesthesia services for obstetrics and managing high-risk labor and deliveries.

Education

The Section plays a key role in Departmental educational initiatives, most prominently by offering a one-year fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Currently, seven fellows are accepted every year through the National Resident Matching Program. The Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship has a comprehensive educational curriculum including daily morning lectures covering core pediatric anesthesia topics, weekly fellows conferences including case discussions, literature clubs, Problem Based Learning Discussions (PBLD), and professionalism workshops; monthly departmental morbidity & mortality conferences, monthly departmental grand rounds, journal clubs every quarter, multidisciplinary simulation and crew resource management training, practice management lectures, quality improvement (QI) lectures, and mock oral board exam preparation. In addition, an in-hospital anesthesia simulation program is available and led by department faculty to assist in educating staff to safely manage emergency situations. The Section also spearheads a number of educational symposia, from the well-attended Colorado Review of Anesthesia for Surgicenters and Hospitals (CRASH) Conference held annually in Vail, Colorado, and the International Symposium on the Pediatric Airway Conference (iSPA). Finally, the Section acts as a clinical rotation site for a number of learners, including Student Anesthesiologist Assistants from the Department's Master of Medical Science in Anesthesiology Program as well as learners from the Emergency Department.

Research



The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Colorado is at the academic forefront of clinical, translational and basic science research in the area of perioperative medicine. The mission of this research work is to better understand disease mechanisms that occur during the perioperative period and to utilize such information to identify novel therapeutic targets, improve treatment of our patients, and to advance the practice of academic anesthesiology, critical care and pain medicine. To achieve such goals, the Departmental investigators often collaborate with researchers from other Departments at the University of Colorado, such as the Department of Pharmacology, Radiology or the Mucosal Inflammation Program (Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology). The Department is dedicated to providing research training opportunities for medical students, residents, fellows and faculty members. A competitive research training and career development program ("Virtue Scholarship") has been established to train anesthesia residents in clinical, translational or laboratory research and to facilitate the transition of mentored researchers to independent scientists. The Section conducts ongoing clinical and non-clinical research to provide innovative anesthesia care for children, and along with a number of research faculty, employs 2 dedicated RN FTEs to support the clinical research mission.

Citizenship

Following the School of Medicine's Professionalism Code of Conduct and the Department of Anesthesiology's RESPECT guidelines, the Section is expected to work internally, within the Department (Adult and Pediatric sections), the School of Medicine, and CHCO, as well as with external and affiliate stakeholders to foster a culture of Responsibility, Ethics, Safety, Professionalism, Education, Communication, and Teamwork. All members of the Section work to create and contribute to the maintenance of a safe, collaborative and productive work environment, for all faculty, staff, and learners. In addition, the Section places strong emphasis on acting as a model member of the Anesthesia Care Team within the clinical setting, while also dedicating efforts to engage with both the local and national community to better understand the needs of the served patient population as well as national initiatives driving innovative anesthesia care.



DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION:



The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking an outstanding physician to serve as the Chief of the Section of Pediatric Anesthesiology and the Department head of Pediatric Anesthesiology at Children's Hospital Colorado. This individual will lead the clinical, educational, research, and other programmatic missions of the Section within the Department of Anesthesiology and will be responsible for the fiscal management of the Section. Additionally, this individual will be expected to work with the appropriate Department Vice Chairs in helping to provide oversight and strategic guidance for the following areas of focus: faculty affairs, educational programs, quality/safety/process improvement, research, and finance.

Supervision Received:

This position reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology,and for the CHCO role, to the CHCO PPAARDI -In-Chief Position will be expected to work (under the direction and guidance of the Chair) with CHCO executive leadership for matters both financial and operational, and will be accountable to both the Chair and CHCO leadership in providing fiduciary stewardship of the Pediatric section of the Department of Anesthesiology.



Supervision Exercised:

This position is responsible for supervision of faculty and staff in the Section of Pediatric Anesthesiology.

Examples of Work Performed:

    Ensure the highest quality and national visibility of the Section's patient care, education research and other scholarly and academic activities as well as community outreach programs. Promote the Departmental priorities of interdisciplinary program development, physician scientist career development, diversity of our workforce and integrated program development with our affiliates. Assure the mentorship of trainees, physician faculty, and Advanced Practice Provider faculty. Recruit, retain and academically develop faculty in the Section. Administer the Section in a fiscally responsible manner within University, School of Medicine and CHCO policies. Personally participate in regularly scheduled meetings of the Department of Anesthesiology's Chiefs of Service, Executive Committee, Faculty meeting and other ad hoc Departmental meetings. Work in a positive and collaborative fashion with the Children's Hospital Colorado, other affiliated anesthetizing locations, the School of Medicine and the Anschutz Medical campus leadership to foster growth and development of the multiple missions of the Section. Support, develop, and provide leadership for pediatric anesthesiology care initiatives within the department, school, and hospital.
  • Provides strategic and operational leadership and program coordination in clinical service, research, teaching and fiscal management for the programs at CHCO,
  • Partners collaboratively with key CHCO leadership in nursing, quality improvement, compliance, ancillary services and other clinical, administrative and support services to ensure safe, effective and optimal care delivery to patients.
  • Fulfills all obligations related to medical staff office requirements regarding credentialing, privileging and ongoing performance evaluation of faculty and other CHCO medical staff members.
  • Evaluates and oversees appropriate GME education and training programs, and makes recommendations for GME resource requirements.
  • Partnering with CHCO Quality and Patient Safety, leads Departmental quality and safety program that evaluates and provides optimal clinical effectiveness and outcomes.
  • Works with Hospital management in meeting expectations and regulations of external regulators and agencies.
  • Partners with the CHCO Executive Director for Child Health Research and the CHCO Chief Research Officer regarding CHCO research operations and funding

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:




The ideal applicant will:
  • Have an MD, MD/PhD, DO, or equivalent terminal degree
  • Be board certified in Pediatric Anesthesiology
  • Have a proven record of administrative and academic leadership abilities, as well as a demonstrated commitment to education and mentoring
  • Currently holding an Associate Professor or higher level faculty rank.

  • National and international reputation in Pediatric Anesthesiology
  • Demonstrated leadership accomplishments in complex organizational environments
  • 3 + years' service in a leadership position within an academic Anesthesiology Department
