Scientific Instrument Maker - University of Colorado Boulder, JILA Research Institute is looking to fill a highly skilled, multidisciplinary position working one-on-one with Physics and Chemistry researchers to design, fabricate, assemble and evaluate scientific instruments. This position requires a high level of mechanical ingenuity, inventiveness and creative ability to take projects from rough ideas and concepts to finished product using manual and CNC machine tools as well as a variety of other power and hand tools.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of five years experience in Scientific Instrument Making, Tool Making or Prototype/R&D shop
- Strong mechanical design background
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge and skills have been achieved
- Ability to work independently
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills

Desired Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of CAD and CAM software
- Demonstrated ability to learn and develop new techniques related to the design and construction of unique mechanical systems
- Understanding of standard engineering materials as well as exotic materials such as refractory metals and ceramics
- Scientific background
- Knowledge of material properties for ultra-high vacuum and cryogenic applications
- TIG welding of stainless steel and aluminum as well as knowledge of brazing and soldering
