Professional Research Assistant

The Department of Emergency Medicine seeks a highly-motivated professional research assistant interested in working in a fast-paced and clinically-oriented environment. Emergency Medicine conducts research into areas such as injury prevention, suicide prevention, critical care, hypertension, toxicology, opioid misuse, patient perceptions of care, and healthcare policy. The Department values applicants who are eager to pursue further training and growth as a researcher and professional. The successful candidate will be interested a long-term position in clinical research, enjoy patient interaction, and have a desire to work in a collaborative and driven pool of PRAs. The position will be working on projects within the department involving multiple aspects of the clinical trial process, including recruitment, consenting, subject visits, medical history review, and data entry. This position will be expected to have an understanding of medical terminology and data collection. Experience with IRBs, EMR systems, and databases/data entry is beneficial. Under the direction of the Lead PRA and the Grants Manager, the student PRA will be assigned various research duties and will report to the relevant Principal investigator (PI) for study tasks.

The main duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Collaborating with faculty investigators and research staff in Emergency Medicine and other departments
  • Screening and assisting in assessment of patients in Emergency Medicine and other settings for eligibility in multiple ongoing prospective clinical research study protocols
  • Recruiting and enrolling eligible patients in clinical and observational trials
  • Completing the consent process, including approaching patients and explaining study procedures and consent forms, answering questions concerning the studies, and obtaining signatures for informed consent and assent from patients and caregivers
  • Performing data entry
  • Abstracting data from patient charts and electronic medical records
  • Collecting, processing, and storing patient samples for future research use
  • Conducting in-person and telephone interviews for data collection
  • Completing other duties necessary for completion of research studies


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Prior experience in clinical research setting
  • Experience in using computer-based tools (Microsoft suite)
  • Ability to work some holidays and weekends
  • Ability to understand and interpret medical terminology and medical charts

Desired Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in research, clinical science or public health
  • Research coordination
  • Prior experience in an emergency department or inpatient setting
  • Medical background (e.g., EMT/Paramedic, nursing, medical assistant, medical technician)
  • Database use (e.g., Excel, Access, REDCap)
  • IRB experience
