The Mission: You'll be working as a Mechanical Engineer on the team designing and building a mission to study dynamic changes in the atmosphere of Mars. Known as the Emirates Mars Mission, the project is being designed to observe weather phenomena like Martian clouds and dust storms as well as changes in temperature, water vapor and other and gases throughout the layers of the atmosphere. CU-Boulder is an academic partner with the United Arab Emirates for this mission. The CU-Boulder part of the mission will be undertaken at LASP.

Job Duties:

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Interfacing with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Documenting interfaces and requirements
  • Designing specialty mechanical hardware (mainly structural components)
  • Modeling hardware in SolidWorks
  • Performing other mechanical engineering tasks including mass properties, harness routing, simple analysis, production planning, creating drawings, etc.

Required Qualifications:

What we require:
  • Minimum 4 years' experience mechanical engineering and design
  • BS or higher degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Due to Export Control Restrictions, only US Citizens and Permanent Residents may apply


What you will need:
  • CAD design experience with SolidWorks
  • Experience creating mechanical drawings
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Ability to function well in a team based environment
  • Attention to detail
  • Resourcefulness and creativity
  • Ability to take personal responsibility for projects and work independently


Desired Qualifications:
  • What we'd like you to have:
  • Familiarity with ANSYS and/or NASTRAN
  • Familiarity with composite structures
  • Working knowledge of mechanism design and/or opto-mechanical design
  • Working knowledge of structural analysis (static and dynamic) and finite element software
  • Recent aerospace experience
  • Experience designing and building electronics boxes
  • Experience working with large assemblies (400+lbs.)
  • Cleanroom experience
