The Department of Pediatrics, Section of Gastroenterology is seeking applications for the position of a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Colorado School of Medicine Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO. The successful candidate will work in the Neurogastroenterology Program and the Enteric Nervous System Research Laboratory. The major function of this position will be to work directly with Jaime Belkind-Gerson, MD, MSc, Associate Professor, in performing: i) cell culture based studies with established cell lines and primary cell cultures, ii) molecular biology work, including transfection studies, PCR, western blotting, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence iii) mouse colony control and genotyping, iv) Mice dissection. In addition, the Professional Research Assistant will also be expected to participate in general laboratory tasks, such as laboratory maintenance and ordering of supplies etc. Active participation in the laboratory meetings of the research group and other Neurobiology meetings are important aspects of the work.

Job Responsibilities:

The Section is located on the all-new Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO. The Anschutz Campus includes the University of Colorado School of Medicine educational and research facilities, Children's Hospital, and the University of Colorado Hospital. Performing murine studies, including inducing ENS injury models such as chemical induced colitis and manipulating genetically established neural and glial-specific transgenic models. Studies can range from acute time-points of days to chronic time-points of weeks. Harvest of murine tissues for both immunohistochemistry analysis or for tissue enzymatic dissociation for establishment of primary culture. Tissue culture work, including maintenance of primary cell lines, and work with transient and stable transfection methodologies, including plasmid and/or viral-based luciferase assays and siRNA silenced cell lines. Molecular biology work including DNA and RNA purification, real-time reverse transcriptional polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), protein analysis, including antibody-based flow-cytometric analysis (FACS), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), western blotting and histological techniques such as tissue sectioning, staining and immunohistochemistry. All research tasks require careful data gathering and documentation. Assistance with data interpretation and analysis.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent doctorate degree.


Required Competencies: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of biological systems and molecular approaches.
  • Good computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office (particularly Word, Excel and Powerpoint).
  • Enthusiasm to learn, adaptability and willingness to be an interactive team member are desired.
  • Background in molecular biology, neurobiology or stem cell biology would be beneficial but not required.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior lab experience
  • Experience with animal handling
  • Strong background in molecular biology
