The University of Colorado School of Medicine (CU SOM) Dean's Office recently awarded the Human Immunology and Immunotherapy Initiative (HI3) $20M through the Academic Enrichment Fund to establish preeminence in human immune system-targeted therapies. To make the CU SOM a leader in human immunology research and clinical applications thereof, the HI3 aims to build research and clinical infrastructure that will include human immune monitoring capabilities, translational research networking, access to pre-clinical models (e.g. humanized mice and human tissue), the ability to produce GMP immunotherapeutics, research training efforts, and faculty recruitment focused on basic human immunology, cancer immunotherapy, and autoimmunity.
The HI3 seeks a Director for the HI3 Autoimmunity Program. This is a tenure-eligible faculty position at the full professor level in the University of Colorado School of Medicine. The primary duties include the development and growth of a Human Autoimmune Disease Pathogenesis and Prevention Program alongside the development of a strong, externally funded research program that addresses mechanisms of autoimmunity with a specific focus on translational research in one of the major human autoimmune diseases. Commensurate responsibilities include the organization of clinical, clinical research and biorepository activities as well as disease pathogenesis and prevention studies in collaboration with the Anschutz Medical Center health care systems. Faculty will also teach medical and graduate students as well as postdoctoral trainees and clinical fellows. Candidates should have extensive research interests and experience in human immunology, autoimmunity, immunotherapy and/or patient responses to immunotherapy.
The individual holding this position will report directly to the Chair of the appointing Department and the Director of the HI3.
This individual will be responsible for the daily management, supervision, training and evaluation of personnel (such as graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and professional research assistants) whose positions are funded by research grants on which s/he is the principal investigator. Additional responsibilities include oversight and organization of human autoimmune disease translational pathogenesis and clinical disease prevention programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the successful candidate will be fourfold. First and foremost, the individual will take on a new and prominent leadership role within the HI3 as the Director of the Autoimmunity Program. Stakeholders in the HI3 include faculty members in a wide array of Departments and Sections on the Anschutz Medical Campus, many of whom play important leadership roles within the School of Medicine, the University of Colorado Health, Children's Hospital of Colorado, and the NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Active collaborations exist among faculty affiliated with multiple SOM Departments, as well as the School of Pharmacy, the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine, the Gates Biomanufacturing Center, ClinImmune Labs, and the Barbara Davis Center. There are numerous exciting opportunities to unify and leverage activities of multiple groups on campus around human immune innovation and the development and expansion of a Human Autoimmune Disease Pathogenesis and Prevention Program. Second, the individual is expected to develop a productive and cutting edge, externally funded research program in human autoimmune disease. This responsibility will include keeping abreast of current literature, formulating long- and short-term research goals, designing and performing appropriate experiments to achieve these goals, evaluating laboratory data and protocols, preparing and submitting manuscripts based on research conducted within the lab, and preparing and submitting grant applications to appropriate federal or private agencies to secure funding for the research program. It is important that individual interact effectively with other members of the scientific and clinical research communities and establish fruitful research collaborations. The individual is expected to present research in all appropriate venues to increase the awareness of research being performed in the lab, and to facilitate collaborative interactions. Third, the individual will carry out teaching responsibilities for medical and graduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows and clinical fellows as assigned by the department chair and performed under the supervision of designated directors for individual courses. Fourth, as a secondary but still important responsibility, the individual is expected to participate in service activities within the department, the university and the broader scientific community that contribute to the accomplishment of department and university missions, and that promote the success and welfare of the broader scientific and medical community. Clinical care duties are not mandatory but are possible to support the research mission of the individual.
Some flexibility in working schedule may be necessary for this position, but no ‘on-call' or shift work is required for this position. Candidates who have clinical duties will become members of the University Physicians Incorporated (UPI) and serve clinical roles consistent with the Department in which s/he is appointed.
This position requires an MD and/or MD/PhD degree or comparable doctoral degree in the biomedical sciences with at least two years of post-doctoral experience within the field of human autoimmunity. Experience in immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and/or a closely related field is essential. Priority will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience investigating the molecular and/or cellular basis of human autoimmune disease pathogenesis. The applicant must be highly motivated, have good interpersonal skills, and have experience in supervising or training of research personnel. For a Director level position, experience in developing and leading human autoimmune disease-focused research programs is required.
