The director of residence life (DRL) oversees the administration and management of a large, comprehensive residence life program serving approximately 8,800 undergraduate and graduate students and families throughout a system of 42 halls and complexes. Reporting to the assistant vice president/executive director of housing, the DRL is a key member of the senior leadership team that collectively manage a $73M budget. The DRL provides vision and leadership for a wide range of programs supporting student and community development, including the Freshman Experience, Think Big (special interest communities), academic initiatives (tutoring and coaching for success), and leadership programs. The director is responsible for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of policies, programs, and personnel practices that promote a vibrant residential experience and strong governance systems (Residence Hall Association and RHA Judicial Board). Additionally, the DRL collaborates with partners throughout the Institute in student life, campus services, and academic affairs to strengthen and expand living and learning communities and enhance the overall student co-curricular experience. As the senior residence life officer, the DRL leads a team of 40 full-time staff and 287 student employees (residence advisors and peer leaders), directly manages an operating budget over $4M, and is responsible for goal setting and monitoring; conducting student learning assessment; crisis management; recruitment, professional development, and evaluation of staff performance; and for ensuring the residence life organizational structure supports a strong, student-centered mission, consistent with the strategic objectives of the Department of Housing and the Institute.
A bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in student personnel, higher education administration, or a related field and a progressive record of eight or more years of significant supervisory and management experience in residence life/residential education are required. Evidence of strong and innovative leadership in building a residential community that contributes to a college or university’s overall success, as well as exceptional skills in decision making, critical thinking, team development and organizational management, budgeting, and goal setting are required. Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with campus stakeholders, particularly academic leaders and faculty, as well as student life colleagues to create and support vibrant residential learning environments, including living-learning communities; experience with residential student conduct processes; excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills; ability to lead in times of crisis; and the ability to build, develop, and support a cohesive, creative, and effective staff who understand and support student success, engagement, and retention will be important in the selection of the new Director of Residence Life.
