Job Description
The College of Education at the University of South Carolina is seeking applications for a dynamic leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Instruction and Teacher Education with a start date of August 2017.

The Department Chair provides academic and administrative leadership and conducts regular departmental and program coordinators' meetings. The department chair represents the interests of the department at appropriate meetings, assists with data collection for self-studies as well as departmental, college, and university reports, encourages faculty to pursue a rigorous research agenda including external funding, prepares course schedules, coordinates course schedules, oversees graduate programs, manages student concerns, becomes knowledgeable about and manages the department in accordance to these policies, participates in professional development activities and professional organizations and performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
(1) An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in teacher education, curriculum or related field (2) An established national record of scholarship that merits a tenured faculty appointment at the level of associate/full professor in a discipline represented in the department (3) An established record and passion for leading a department that prepares educators to work effectively with those who have been traditionally discriminated against, excluded, or marginalized locally, nationally, and internationally (4) Willingness to establish partnerships with government agencies, professional organizations, schools, and other stakeholders to advocate for high quality education and social justice for all learners (5) An established record of mentorship and a desire to build a collaborated spirit within the department and college (6) Knowledge and appreciation of multiple types of research/creative activity (including multiple paradigms) (7) Successful supervisory experience (8) Experience with doctoral level programs (9) Excellence in written and oral skills and (10) A desire to work in a dynamic environment.


Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicant who possess (1) Demonstrated experience in designing and leading new initiatives/programs (including online programs) to advance the mission and goals of the department and college (2) Administrative experience including budget management, course scheduling, mentoring/evaluating faculty and supervising/evaluating professional staff (3) Strong commitment to equity, diversity and working with diverse populations and (4) Appreciation for interdisciplinary research.
