The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Computer Science Instructor, Foothill College.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

Under the direction of the Dean of the Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering (PSME) Division, the instructor is responsible to teach a variety of college-level courses in computer programming, algorithms, data structures, software engineering, operating systems, computer architecture, database management and various specialized courses such as (but not limited to) mobile app development, software testing, computer security, functional programming and distributed/parallel computing. Motivate and encourage students to be successful. Support program planning and develop goals and metrics for student learning outcomes. Support student success by encouraging the use of the STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) Center as well as other college-wide academic support services. Day, evening, online, on-campus and off-campus assignments may all be a part of this position.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

Duties also include sharing institutional responsibilities of value to the department, division, college and/or district, including actively participating in the spirit of shared governance. These responsibilities may include recruitment and hiring; class schedule preparation; budget development; providing input for performance appraisals; mentorship; general oversight of support staff; student recruitment and retention; curriculum/program development and evaluation; program review; club advising; committees; accreditation; articulation; and other duties as assigned.

In addition, instructors are expected to maintain a commitment and sensitivity to and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, cultural, disability, religious background and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff, and uphold a commitment to integrating equity practices in the College's Instructional Programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Master's degree in computer science or computer engineering OR bachelor's degree in either of the above AND master's degree in mathematics, cybernetics, business administration, accounting or engineering OR bachelor's degree in engineering AND master's degree in cybernetics, engineering mathematics, or business administration OR bachelor's degree in mathematics AND master's degree in cybernetics, engineering mathematics, or business administration OR bachelor's degree in any of the above AND a master's degree in information science, computer information systems, or information systems OR the equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Either: a . Strong ability in teaching introductory computer science courses, C++, Python and Java programming languages. Expertise in development on multiple platforms and software engineering growth areas such as (but not limited to) using agile, open source methodologies, mobile computing, quality assurance, continuous delivery, or functional programming or distributed computing. OR b. Strong ability in teaching Information Security, Microsoft Client and Server Operating Systems, Linux, Virtualization, Storage Area Networking (SAN), Routing/Switching, Firewalls, Fiber and Copper Cabling, Wireless Local Area Networks (WiFi), Identity and Authentication Management (IAM), Telephony and Voice over IP (VoIP), DNS and DHCP, IPv4 and IPv6 Subnetting, and Project Management.
  2. Recent undergraduate teaching experience at a community college or university.
  3. Knowledge, skills and ability to develop courses in testing/QA, open source, functional programming and distributed computing.

  5. Teaching pedagogy that addresses a variety of learning styles including an emphasis on interactive multimedia, Internet resources, and online assessment tools.
  6. Familiarity with the use and development of online courses including those that meet disability guidelines.
  7. Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  8. Ability to develop and implement student retention-related activities, participate in articulation with four-year schools and do outreach with area high schools.

  1. Experience with pedagogy that engages and motivates students in their own learning process and develops critical thinking.
  2. Willingness to make positive contributions to the department and the greater work of the college.
  3. Commitment to professional growth.
  4. Willingness and ability to assume a leadership role in developing innovative Computer Science curriculum.
  5. Ability to use instructional methods that reflect cultural sensitivity and to effectively teach a diverse student population.
  6. Ability to continuously improve instructional quality and enhance the learning process (e.g., by using and reviewing innovative methodologies, techniques and delivery methods such as collaborative learning, service learning, learning communities, instructional technology and online education.)
