Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) - Italian (Modern Language)
FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Modern Language Department at Bronx Community College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Italian at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in August 2017.
Bronx Community College is among the nation's top ten colleges in minority enrollment. Our student body reflects the diversity of the Bronx; we serve approximately 11,000 students from 100 countries. We are a diverse faculty that values pedagogical inquiry and dedication to teaching. Located on a 45-acre tree-lined campus, Bronx Community College was recently designated a National Historic Landmark — the very first community college to enjoy this honor. The campus was cited as a nationally significant example of Beaux-Arts and Modernist architecture in the United States, containing seminal works by Stanford White and Marcel Breuer.
The Modern Language Department currently offers a Liberal Arts Degree with a Spanish concentration. The program offers language courses from the introductory to the advanced levels as well as thematic advanced courses in Caribbean, French, Iberian, Italian, and Latin American literature and culture. The Department offers courses in five languages: Arabic, French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. Recent initiatives include study abroad, e-Portfolio integration, learning communities, hybrid courses, Open Educational Resources (OER), and the introduction of less commonly taught languages (LCTLs).
We are seeking the strongest candidates, regardless of specialization in Italian Studies, and encourage applications from innovative scholars who study the literature and culture within the larger interdisciplinary frame of European and global studies (i.e., intellectual, aesthetic, and cultural history; the transnational study of literature, culture, and media; multicultural Americas or Europe). We also seek a scholar with experience in curricular and programmatic innovation.
Scholarly growth and involvement in department and college initiatives is required. Perform teaching, research and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise. Share responsibility for committee and department assignments, including the coordination of multi-sectioned Italian courses. The position entails teaching courses in Italian, conducting research leading to publication, designing or updating courses, providing curriculum material, constructing syllabi, mentoring students, and serving on various faculty and student-oriented committees. Other areas of responsibility include grant writing, assessment, faculty development, and academic advisement. The position will offer the opportunity to develop new courses and initiatives, and the possibility to teach in a second language.
Earned doctorate in Italian, Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, Romance Languages, or a related field, with native or near-native fluency both in Italian and in English. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
Teaching experience with culturally and linguistically diverse student populations at the undergraduate level is preferred. Departmental and institutional service is required, and flexibility for evening or weekend teaching is expected. Grant writing experience is a plus. Demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and interest in technology enhanced instruction.
Training, experience, and interest in one of the following areas are preferred:
- Open Educational Resources (OERs) or online/hybrid courses
- Expertise and experience to teach in another language (other than Italian)
- Evidence of excellence in Italian language teaching at all levels of undergraduate language instruction, with a strong commitment to introductory courses
