Oversee music direction related to the Musical Theatre BA and BFA degrees and participate broadly in the Theatre Department's community of students, artists, and scholars, bringing substantial expertise in vocal performance for musical theatre. This position, reporting directly to the Chair and working in collaboration with faculty in the Musical Theatre Program and additional Theatre Department faculty will contribute to curriculum revision, course design, and recruitment activities while taking primary ownership over the vocal health of a large population of BA and BFA students. The position will teach a minimum of four classes per semester, with course assignments and/or releases from teaching provided for the musical direction of a main stage musical each semester. Service to the department will include coordination and scheduling of part -time staff accompanists and adjunct faculty musical directors to ensure that all Theatre Department needs are met for relevant classes, rehearsals, auditions, student-directed musicals, productions and other projects. relevant classes, rehearsals, auditions, student-directed musicals, productions and other projects.


  • Teach courses in the musical theatre program with an emphasis in vocal performance
  • Serve as Musical Director for two mainstage productions per year as part of teaching load, which includes score arrangement, contracting musicians, rehearsal accompaniment, and vocal coaching
  • Participate in curriculum development and design
  • Will advise and mentor students, providing vocal coaching to musical theatre students
  • Serve on committees in service of the Theatre Department, the School of Fine and Performing Arts and/or Columbia College Chicago
  • Participate actively in recruitment and promotion of the department
  • Contribute to a culturally pluralistic learning environment through curriculum initiatives, pedagogy, and service
  • Maintain currency in the field
  • Coordinate and schedule part-time staff accompanists and part-time faculty musical directors to cover classes, rehearsals, auditions, student -directed musicals, productions, and other projects for the Musical Theatre program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Advanced degree (PhD, DMA, MFA, MM, MA) in Music, Musical Theatre, Musical Directing or related field or equivalent professional accomplishment required.
  • Candidates should demonstrate broad knowledge and experience in the subjects they would teach.
  • Prior teaching experience at the college/university level.
  • Prior professional experience as a musical director, strong piano and accompanist skills, and a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates are essential.
