Learning Disabilities Specialist
Disability Support Services (DSS) at Towson University is currently accepting applications for a Coordinator/Learning Disabilities Specialist. This is one of two Learning Disabilities Specialist positions in the office of Disability Support Services that report to the DSS Director. The purpose of the position is to support the mission of DSS in ensuring equal access to educational opportunities under Section 504 and ADAAA laws with a focus on: 1) implementing accommodations and services for students with learning disabilities, ADHD and other cognitive disabilities, as well as students with psychological disabilities (2) helping students develop study and time management skills, and compensatory strategies, and (3) providing education to the campus community on disability-related topics, as well as technical assistance to faculty and staff regarding DSS and students with disabilities.
Assist in developing, implementing and evaluating DSS programs and initiatives regarding students with disabilities, and provide advice on policies, procedures and practices impacting accommodations and services. Manage a caseload of students consisting primarily of students with LD, ADHD and other cognitive disabilities, as well as students with psychological disabilities. Conduct intake interviews with students; evaluate psychological, educational, medical and other related documentation to determine eligibility for services and appropriate accommodations. Provide academic and supportive counseling, problem solving, advocacy, mediation and referral services to students with disabilities. Assist students with learning disabilities, ADHD and other cognitive disabilities to understand their learning strengths and weaknesses and develop compensatory strategies. In conjunction with the other DSS Learning Disabilities Specialist, coordinate case reviews of students with learning disabilities, ADHD and other cognitive disabilities, and provide guidance to other DSS specialists working with students with these types of disabilities. Consult with faculty and staff to facilitate the delivery of accommodations and services to students with disabilities. Conduct educational programs and presentations to educate the campus community on topics such as DSS information, disability awareness, Section 504 and ADAAA compliance, and universal design for learning. Assist in the coordination and implementation of various DSS programs and activities, including disability awareness activities, DSS new student orientation, and Delta Alpha Pi honor society; represent DSS at University programs, such as Admissions and Orientation events; serve on various University committees as requested. Keep abreast of best practices and developments in the field of postsecondary education for students with disabilities and enhance professional knowledge and skills by participating in professional association meetings and seminars.
Master's degree in special education, rehabilitation counseling, psychology, counseling, social work or related field, and three years of related professional experience. Must have ability to interpret psycho-educational, psychological, educational, and medical evaluations and apply information to determine appropriate accommodations and services; ability to engage students with disabilities and work effectively in a college setting; strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team; knowledge of LD, ADHD, traumatic brain injuries and psychological conditions, as well as Section 504, ADAAA and FERPA laws; knowledge of study and time management skills and compensatory learning strategies; and the ability to present effectively to diverse groups of individuals.
